Tripura LoP Jitendra Chaudhury has demanded a Tripura High Court judge-led probe into DGP Anurag’s death, rejecting BJP allegations of politicising the issue and calling for an independent judicial inquiry to address public concerns and ensure transparency.
Tripura Leader of Opposition and CPI(M) State Secretary Jitendra Chaudhury on Tuesday strongly rejected the BJP’s allegation that the opposition was attempting to politicise the death of Director General of Police (DGP) Anurag and instead renewed his demand for an independent judicial inquiry headed by a sitting judge of the Tripura High Court.
The demand came in response to remarks made by BJP State President Abhishek Debroy, who had accused the CPI(M) of trying to derive political mileage from the tragic death of the state’s top police officer. Refuting the allegation, Chaudhury said the opposition raises only those matters that carry significant political and public importance and does not seek to politicise every unfortunate incident.
Addressing the media, the CPI(M) leader stated that the death of a serving Director General of Police had naturally raised serious questions among the people of Tripura. He maintained that the BJP-led state government, which is responsible for the administration, must answer the concerns being expressed by citizens.
Chaudhury said that the DGP was not an ordinary government official but the highest-ranking police officer in the state. According to him, the circumstances surrounding the death have generated widespread public curiosity and concern, making it essential for the government to ensure a transparent investigation.
He further noted that Anurag had built an impressive professional career, rising from the post of Sub-Divisional Police Officer to become the Director General of Police. Throughout his service, he handled several significant assignments at both national and international levels. Such extensive experience, Chaudhury observed, generally equips senior officers with the mental resilience required to face difficult situations.
Questioning the circumstances that allegedly led to the DGP’s death, the Leader of Opposition said the public deserves to know what factors may have contributed to such a tragic development. He argued that merely conducting a routine investigation would not be sufficient to restore public confidence.
Chaudhury also alleged that several government officials in the state have been working under immense pressure. He claimed that honest and sincere officers often become victims of administrative and political pressures while remaining unable to openly express their concerns because of service rules governing government employees.
Calling for a completely independent inquiry, the CPI(M) leader categorically stated that the Tripura Police should not investigate the case, considering the position held by the deceased officer. He also expressed reservations about a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry, saying that such an investigation may not fully address public doubts.
Instead, Chaudhury proposed that the inquiry should be headed by a sitting judge of the Tripura High Court, preferably the Chief Justice, to ensure complete impartiality and transparency. He urged the state cabinet to adopt a resolution requesting the High Court to constitute such an inquiry.
The BJP, however, has maintained that the opposition is attempting to exploit the DGP’s death for political purposes. The ruling party has accused the CPI(M) of unnecessarily raising political questions over a tragic incident.

The demand for a High Court judge-led investigation has now added a fresh political dimension to the ongoing debate surrounding the death of DGP Anurag. As public attention remains focused on the case, the response of the BJP-led government and any decision regarding the nature of the investigation are expected to be closely watched in the coming days.
