Sensex & Nifty end in negative zone

Benchmark domestic equity indices ended in the negative zone today. The Sensex declined 238 points or 0.3 per cent to close at 77,470. The Nifty lost 51 points or 0.2 per cent to settle at 24,188. 
However, in the broader market on the National Stock Exchange, Midcap 100 index rose 0.3 per cent and Smallcap 100 index added over half a per cent.
Earlier, markets opened on a flat note as investors remained cautious amid geopolitical uncertainties and elevated crude oil prices. Both the indices remained in negative zone and traded in a narrow range throughout the session. 
In the Sensex pack, 21 out of 30 companies registered gains. Among the top performers, Bajaj Finserv jumped over two per cent, Indigo rose nearly 1.6 per cent and UltraTech Cement advanced 1.4 per cent. In contrast, HDFC Bank shed around 2.1 per cent, Reliance and SBI declined almost one and a half per cent, and TCS lost over 1.3 per cent. 
In the sectoral indices on the BSE, 13 out of 25 sectors ended in the negative zone. Among the top laggards, PSU Banks dropped 0.8 per cent, Focused IT as well as IT slipped almost 0.7 per cent and Top 10 Bank index lost over half a per cent. In contrast, MidSmall Private Banks Quality Tilt jumped more than 2.9 per cent, Realty rose 1.1 per cent, and Commodities added one per cent. 
The overall market breadth at the BSE was positive, as shares of 2 thousand 188 advanced, 2  thousand 21 companies declined, and 190 remained unchanged.
