Tripura Director General of Police (DGP) Anurag Dhankar, IPS, was found hanging inside the washroom of his official chamber at the Police Headquarters in Agartala on Monday, sending shockwaves across the state administration, police force, and the public. The tragic incident has prompted an official investigation, while authorities have stated that the exact cause of death will be determined only after the completion of the post-mortem examination and forensic analysis.

Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha confirmed the incident through an official statement and expressed profound grief over the untimely demise of the state’s top police officer.

“I am deeply shocked and saddened by the tragic demise of Anurag, IPS, Director General of Police, Tripura, who was found hanging in the washroom of his official chamber today,” the Chief Minister stated.

According to Dr. Saha, immediately after receiving information about the incident, he, along with the Chief Secretary and the Home Secretary, rushed to the Police Headquarters to assess the situation. The DGP was immediately shifted to AGMC and GBP Hospital, where attending doctors examined him and declared him “brought dead.”

The Chief Minister extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, praying for eternal peace for the departed soul and strength for his family to overcome the irreparable loss.

The tragic death of the senior IPS officer has triggered widespread grief across Tripura. Political leaders, senior government officials, police personnel, civil servants, and members of the public expressed their condolences through social media and other platforms. Tributes poured in from across the country as news of the incident spread rapidly, making it one of the most discussed developments in the state.

Hospital authorities confirmed that Anurag Dhankar was brought to GB Pant Hospital without pulse or blood pressure. Senior physician Dr. Pradeep Bhaumik informed reporters that doctors immediately initiated cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) following established medical protocols. Despite repeated attempts by a team of senior doctors, the officer could not be revived.

“He was brought in with no signs of life. After repeated attempts, we had to declare him dead at 12:48 pm,” Dr. Bhaumik said while briefing the media.

Following the medical examination, the body was shifted to the hospital morgue for a post-mortem examination. Officials said that the findings of the post-mortem report would play a crucial role in determining the exact cause and circumstances surrounding the death.

Meanwhile, forensic experts visited the DGP’s office at the Police Headquarters to collect evidence as part of the investigation. Senior police officers and government officials remained present throughout the day, coordinating the inquiry into the incident. Authorities have appealed to the public not to speculate until the forensic investigation and medical examination are completed.

After the post-mortem examination at GBP Hospital, the body was taken to the official residence of the late DGP, where family members, colleagues, and well-wishers paid their final respects.

Anurag Dhankar belonged to the 1994 batch of the Indian Police Service (IPS) and served in the Tripura cadre. He assumed charge as the Director General of Police of Tripura in May 2025. During his distinguished career spanning more than three decades, he held several important positions within the state and central government.

Before becoming the state’s police chief, he served as Director General of Police (Intelligence) in Tripura. He also worked on central deputation with premier agencies including the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Border Security Force (BSF). Dhankar further represented India in the United Nations Mission in Kosovo, gaining valuable international policing experience and earning recognition for his professionalism and commitment to public service.

Colleagues and senior officers remembered him as a disciplined, dedicated, and highly respected police officer who worked with integrity throughout his career. His sudden demise has left the entire police fraternity and administrative machinery deeply saddened.

According to official sources, his wife resides in Agartala, while their son is currently based in Canada. Family members have been informed, and arrangements are being made following the completion of legal formalities.

The circumstances surrounding the DGP’s death remain under investigation. Officials have reiterated that no conclusions should be drawn until the post-mortem findings and forensic examination are available.
