Benchmark domestic equity indices ended on a flat note today. The Sensex added just a point to close at 77,187. The Nifty dipped six points to settle at 24,073.
In the broader market on the National Stock Exchange, Midcap 100 dropped 0.4 per cent and Smallcap 100 index fell by 0.1 per cent.
Earlier, markets opened on a positive note and traded with modest gains during the first half of the session. However, both indices gave up their early gains in the latter half. Investor sentiment remained cautious amid geopolitical uncertainties, elevated crude oil prices and weak cues from Asian markets.
In the Sensex pack, 15 out of 30 companies registered gains. Among the top performers, Indigo gained over 1.8 per cent, HCL Tech rose 1.7 per cent and Bajaj Finance advanced 1.6 per cent. In contrast, Eternal shed 2.8 per cent, Bharat Electronics Limited as well as Bajaj Finserv declined one per cent, and HDFC Bank lost more than 0.9 per cent.
In the sectoral indices on the BSE, 13 out of 25 sectors ended in the negative zone. Among the top losers, Realty dropped 0.9 per cent, Financial Services as well as Hospitals dropped 0.6 per cent and PSU banks lost over half a per cent. In contrast, Consumer Durables jumped 1.1 per cent, IT as well as Focused IT rose 0.6 per cent, and Auto added 0.3 per cent.
