AGMC and GBP Hospital successfully completed the eighth and ninth kidney transplant surgeries in Agartala on consecutive days. Tripura Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha praised the achievement, highlighting the growing expertise of local doctors and the state’s expanding advanced healthcare services.

Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) and Govind Ballabh Pant (GBP) Hospital have successfully conducted the eighth and ninth kidney transplant surgeries at the state-run medical institution on two consecutive days, marking another significant milestone in Tripura’s healthcare sector. The achievement reflects the state’s growing capacity to provide advanced medical treatment and strengthens confidence in its expanding transplant programme.

The Tripura Health Department announced on Wednesday that both surgeries were completed successfully with the joint efforts of specialists from AGMC and GBP Hospital and the transplant team from Shija Hospitals and Research Institute, Manipur. Officials confirmed that both kidney donors and recipients are stable and recovering well under close medical supervision.

Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha welcomed the successful procedures and described them as a proud achievement for the state’s healthcare system. Speaking to media persons after an official event, he said that while the surgeries are currently being conducted in collaboration with Shija Hospital, doctors from Tripura have now acquired the required expertise and practical experience to independently perform kidney transplant operations in the near future.

The eighth kidney transplant was carried out on Tuesday on a 22-year-old patient from Chailengta in Dhalai district. His 45-year-old mother donated one of her kidneys, enabling the life-saving procedure. The following day, the ninth transplant was performed on a 23-year-old patient from Padmanagar in the Bishramganj area of Sepahijala district. In this case as well, the patient’s 45-year-old mother served as the kidney donor. Health officials stated that both donor-recipient pairs are recovering satisfactorily.

The surgeries were jointly performed by nephrologists Dr. Manas Gope, Dr. Samaresh Pal, Dr. Reshmi Das and Dr. Udayan Saha; urologists Dr. Mukut Debnath, Dr. Bijit Lodh and Dr. Jiban Debnath; and anaesthesiologists Dr. Bhaskar Majumdar and Dr. Tapan Debbarma from AGMC and GBP Hospital. They were assisted by consultant urologist and transplant surgeon Dr. Paonam Samarendra Singh, Dr. Maharabam Mahade, consultant anaesthesiologist Dr. Taijenjam Kennedy Singh and DNB anaesthesiologist Dr. Shreya Kumar Dubey from Shija Hospitals. Nursing officers, operation theatre technicians and support staff from both institutions also played a crucial role in ensuring the success of the procedures.

According to the Health Department, each surgery commenced at around 9 a.m. and lasted approximately six hours before concluding at about 3 p.m. Officials reiterated that every kidney transplant is performed only after receiving clearance from the authorised committee, confirming donor-recipient compatibility and completing all mandatory medical examinations.

The department also highlighted that all nine kidney transplant surgeries conducted at AGMC and GBP Hospital have been provided completely free of cost to patients. Additionally, the Tripura Government bears the travel expenses of the visiting transplant specialists from Shija Hospitals, ensuring that advanced healthcare services remain accessible to eligible patients without financial burden.
