The United States Mint has announced plans to produce a new $1 commemorative coin featuring President Donald Trump as part of the nationwide celebrations marking the 250th anniversary of American independence. The announcement was made on Wednesday by US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, who described the coin as a tribute to the enduring legacy of liberty and patriotism as the United States prepares to commemorate its historic milestone in 2026.
According to the announcement, the new coin will bear a portrait of President Donald Trump on its obverse side. Above the portrait appears the word “Liberty,” while the commemorative dates 1776–2026 are engraved below, symbolizing the 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence. The national motto “In God We Trust” is inscribed beside the portrait, with two stars positioned on either side of the image.
The reverse side of the coin features a detailed eagle with outstretched wings, holding an olive branch in one talon and arrows in the other, representing peace and strength. At the center of the eagle is a shield displaying the number 250, highlighting the nation’s semiquincentennial celebration. Encircling the design are the inscriptions “United States of America” and “One Dollar.” Above the eagle is the Latin motto “E Pluribus Unum,” meaning “Out of many, one,” reflecting the country’s long-standing national identity.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent shared details of the commemorative coin through a social media post, stating that the US Mint would begin striking the new coin as America celebrates 250 years of independence.
“As America commemorates 250 years of independence, the US Mint will begin striking this new $1 gold coin to honour the enduring legacy of liberty and a lasting symbol of patriotism,” Bessent wrote.
He further noted that the coin, featuring President Trump, celebrates the strength of American values and the nation’s commitment to preserving freedom for future generations.
While the announcement confirmed the production of the commemorative coin, officials have not yet disclosed when it will officially be released. The Treasury Department also did not specify how many coins would be minted or provide details regarding the coin’s metal composition, circulation status, pricing, or whether it will be produced exclusively for collectors.
The United States Mint regularly issues circulating currency, commemorative coins, and collectible medals that mark important historical events and national achievements. The new Trump-themed $1 coin forms part of a broader series of commemorative products celebrating the 250th anniversary of American independence, a landmark event that will be observed throughout 2026.
