In men’s cricket, India defeated hosts England by 6 wickets in the first One-Day International of 3-match series at Edgbaston in Birmingham last night. With this, the Men in Blue now lead the series 1-0, ending their losing streak in international cricket. Opting to bat first, England got bundled out for 258 runs in the 48th over. Joe Root scored the highest 76 runs and remained not out, while Liam Dawson also contributed a crucial 68 runs. For India, Axar Patel bagged 4 wickets.
In reply, the Shubman Gill-led side comfortably overhauled the target in the 46th over, riding on the skipper’s fabulous innings of 80 runs, after which he got retired hurt. Moreover, Washington Sundar and Axar Patel both crossed the half-century mark and finished the match being unbeaten. Axar Patel was adjudged Player of the Match for his all-round performance. Both teams will next face each other in the second ODI at Sophia Gardens in Cardiff tomorrow. The third ODI will be played at Lord’s Cricket Ground in London on Sunday.
