Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim spoke with Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, congratulating him on assuming office and expressing interest in visiting Tamil Nadu during his September India trip for the BRICS Summit and meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Malaysia’s Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim on Friday held a telephone conversation with Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, congratulating him on assuming office and expressing hopes of visiting Tamil Nadu during his upcoming trip to India in September.

The conversation comes at a significant moment for regional diplomacy and cultural engagement between Malaysia and Tamil Nadu, which share longstanding historical and people-to-people ties. During the call, Ibrahim informed Vijay that he would travel to India later this year to participate in the upcoming BRICS Summit and meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

In a statement shared on social media platform X, Ibrahim said he had congratulated Vijay once again on taking charge as Chief Minister and wished him strength and wisdom in leading Tamil Nadu. He also indicated that, if schedules permit, he would make a brief visit to the southern Indian state during his India tour.

The Malaysian Prime Minister described Vijay as a leader carrying a major responsibility for the people of Tamil Nadu and expressed confidence in his ability to govern effectively. Ibrahim’s remarks highlighted growing goodwill between the Malaysian leadership and the new Tamil Nadu administration.

This marks the second congratulatory message from Ibrahim to Vijay within two weeks. Earlier this month, shortly after the Tamil Nadu election results were announced, Ibrahim publicly praised Vijay’s political victory and referred to the deep cultural and historical connections shared between Malaysia and Tamil Nadu.

In his earlier message, Ibrahim had noted that Vijay’s popularity as a film actor had now transformed into a larger public responsibility after entering politics and winning the confidence of voters. He also referred to the phrase “one-finger revolution,” describing it as a symbol of democratic change in Tamil Nadu.

The relationship between Malaysia and Tamil Nadu has historically been shaped by migration, trade, education, and cultural exchange. Millions of people of Tamil origin live in Malaysia, contributing significantly to the country’s social and economic development over generations. Political observers believe Ibrahim’s outreach reflects Malaysia’s continued interest in maintaining strong regional and cultural ties with southern India.

The anticipated India visit by the Malaysian Prime Minister is also important in the context of international diplomacy, as India will host the next BRICS Summit under its 2026 chairmanship. India’s presidency of the grouping is being guided by the theme “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability,” focusing on a people-centric and development-oriented global agenda.

The BRICS platform, which includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa along with newer member nations, continues to play a major role in discussions on global economic cooperation, sustainable development, and strategic partnerships among emerging economies.

Political analysts believe a potential meeting between Ibrahim and Vijay in Tamil Nadu could further strengthen bilateral engagement at the regional level while enhancing cultural and economic collaboration between Malaysia and the southern Indian state.
