Congress leaders, including Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge, paid tribute to former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi on his death anniversary, remembering his vision for youth empowerment, technological progress, and national development during a memorial event at Veer Bhumi in New Delhi.
Senior leaders of the Congress party gathered at Veer Bhumi in New Delhi on Thursday to pay tribute to former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi on his death anniversary, remembering his contributions to India’s technological transformation, youth empowerment, and national development.
Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, former Congress president Sonia Gandhi, and Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra offered floral tributes at the memorial site dedicated to the late Prime Minister.
Several senior Congress leaders and party workers also attended the tribute ceremony, including Ashok Gehlot, P. Chidambaram, and Mukul Wasnik, who joined supporters in remembering Rajiv Gandhi’s political legacy and leadership.
Congress veteran Jagdish Tytler described Rajiv Gandhi as a compassionate and visionary leader whose ideas focused on science, children, and the future of India’s youth.
Speaking during the memorial event, Tytler said Rajiv Gandhi possessed rare qualities as both a leader and a human being. He added that the country needed leaders with scientific thinking and concern for future generations, qualities he believed Rajiv Gandhi strongly represented during his political career.
Congress leader Mani Shankar Aiyar also reflected on Rajiv Gandhi’s vision for the country and said the ideals associated with his leadership remained relevant in modern India. Referring to the inscriptions at Veer Bhumi, Aiyar said they reflected the former Prime Minister’s message, values, and aspirations for the nation.
Leader of Opposition in the Haryana Assembly Bhupinder Singh Hooda said Rajiv Gandhi was widely admired for his forward-looking vision, especially for young Indians. Hooda stated that the country had high expectations from Rajiv Gandhi during his tenure as Prime Minister because of his focus on modernization and national progress.
Congress leader Srinivas B. V. said Rajiv Gandhi’s ideology and developmental vision continued to inspire party workers and supporters across the country. He added that the former Prime Minister’s contributions to India’s growth and modernization were still remembered decades after his death.
Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee President Devender Yadav praised Rajiv Gandhi for introducing policies that encouraged technological advancement and digital development in India. He said Rajiv Gandhi played a major role in bringing computerization and modern technology into the country at a time when India was beginning to embrace rapid economic and social changes.
Rajiv Gandhi became Prime Minister in October 1984 following the assassination of his mother, former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. At the age of 40, he became the youngest Prime Minister in India’s history and served in the position until December 1989.
Born on August 20, 1944, Rajiv Gandhi is widely remembered for promoting modernization, telecommunications, education reforms, and technological innovation during his tenure. His government emphasized computerization and communication reforms that later became important pillars of India’s digital growth.
Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated on May 21, 1991, during an election rally in Sriperumbudur in Tamil Nadu after a suicide bomber linked to the LTTE carried out an attack. His death remains one of the most tragic political assassinations in Indian history.

On his death anniversary, Congress leaders reiterated their commitment to carrying forward the ideals and developmental vision associated with Rajiv Gandhi, while remembering his role in shaping a modern and technologically progressive India.
