Tripura CM Manik Saha inaugurated a modern State Data Center in Agartala to strengthen flood control, river erosion management, and irrigation planning. The government announced 193 new flood control projects and expanded irrigation initiatives to protect agricultural land and improve water resource management.

Chief Minister Manik Saha on Sunday said accurate and scientific information generated through the newly inaugurated State Data Center would play a major role in strengthening flood control measures and improving overall water resource management across Tripura. He also announced that the state government is planning to implement 193 new flood control projects to prevent river erosion in different parts of the state.

The Chief Minister inaugurated the State Data Center established by the Water Resources Department under the Public Works Department at the Visvesvaraya Complex in Kunjaban, Agartala. The modern facility has been developed to support groundwater monitoring, river water level assessment, flood forecasting, and integrated water resource management through advanced technological systems.

Addressing the inauguration ceremony, Dr. Saha said the state government is focusing on reforms in every sector by integrating modern technology with infrastructure development. According to him, technological advancement has become essential for ensuring effective governance and sustainable development.

He said the establishment of the State Data Center marks an important milestone for Tripura and would significantly enhance the efficiency of flood monitoring and irrigation planning in the state. He added that scientific data collected through the center would help authorities take timely decisions during floods and improve preparedness against natural disasters.

“The accurate information generated from this data center will play a crucial role in flood control and water resource management. Along with infrastructure development, reforms based on practical needs are necessary for the progress of the state,” the Chief Minister said.

Dr. Saha further stated that the initiative aligns with the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to expand knowledge-based governance and incorporate advanced technology into administrative systems. He informed that the state government is also introducing a three-tier e-office service to accelerate official work and improve administrative efficiency.

Highlighting the importance of agriculture in the state economy, the Chief Minister said agricultural production plays a direct role in increasing the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of a state. He noted that the new data center would contribute to the expansion of irrigation facilities and improve agricultural productivity by enabling better water management.

Dr. Saha informed that the National Hydrology Project was launched during the 2016–17 financial year under a flagship initiative of the Central Government. Under the first phase of the project, an amount of Rs 4.67 crore was spent for establishing the State Data Center. In the second phase, another Rs 4.50 crore will be invested for further development and strengthening of the facility.

Providing details about irrigation expansion in the state, the Chief Minister said that as of March 31, 2026, around 1,23,754 hectares of land have already been brought under irrigation coverage in Tripura. The government has also undertaken fresh initiatives to increase irrigation facilities in more agricultural areas.

He announced that after the completion of ongoing projects, an additional 10,401 hectares of agricultural land would come under irrigation coverage. Besides this, the state government plans to implement 34 minor irrigation storage-cum-harvesting structure projects at an estimated cost of Rs 972 crore, which would further provide irrigation support to 6,137 hectares of land.

On flood protection infrastructure, Dr. Saha said that 42 dams with a combined length of 152 kilometers have already been constructed in the state for flood control purposes. In addition, 193 new flood control projects are being planned to tackle riverbank erosion and protect vulnerable regions from flood damage.

The Chief Minister also stated that special initiatives are being taken by the government to control floodwaters in several areas of Gomati district, including Agartala, where flooding and waterlogging have affected residents in recent years.

He emphasized that the adoption of modern technology in water management would improve transparency, speed, and efficiency in delivering public services. According to him, the advanced State Data Center will help authorities make more accurate assessments related to groundwater levels, river conditions, and flood risks.
