The International Day of Light is being observed today. The day is marked every year on the 16th of May, commemorating the first successful operation of a laser in 1960 by physicist and engineer Theodore Maiman. The theme for this year is “Light for a Sustainable Future,” focusing on how light-based technologies contribute to sustainability through energy-efficient lighting, green manufacturing, and improved agricultural practices.
The study of light has led to advancements in alternative energy sources, life-saving medical diagnostic tools and treatments, high-speed communication technologies, and numerous discoveries that have transformed society and deepened understanding of the universe. On this occasion, UNESCO has called for strengthening scientific cooperation and harnessing the power of light for peace and sustainable development.
