A high-level policy gathering in Hudson Institute has underscored how India’s foreign policy is being recalibrated amid shifting global power dynamics, with experts pointing to a delicate balance between strategic independence and deeper engagement with the United States.
At the “New India Conference,” senior policymakers and analysts highlighted that India’s global posture is no longer defined by rigid alignments but by a pragmatic, multi-layered strategy shaped by economic ambition, geopolitical pressures, and evolving partnerships. Former US Ambassador to India Kenneth Juster noted that India’s approach reflects a significant transition from Cold War-era non-alignment to what he described as a flexible doctrine of “strategic autonomy.”
According to Juster, India continues to prioritize independent decision-making while actively collaborating with multiple global actors. “India remains committed to working with others without surrendering its independence of judgment,” he said, adding that New Delhi’s vision of a multipolar world guides its diplomatic engagements.
This balancing act has become particularly evident in India’s relationship with Washington. While tensions with China have driven India closer to the United States, Juster emphasized that New Delhi is cautious about becoming too closely aligned with any single power. The result is a nuanced partnership that blends cooperation with calculated distance.
Economic growth has emerged as a central pillar of India’s foreign policy. Juster highlighted that India’s GDP, now estimated at approximately $4.15 trillion, has positioned the country as the world’s fourth-largest economy, with expectations of soon climbing to third place. This rapid expansion is not only reshaping domestic priorities but also strengthening India’s leverage in global negotiations.
Echoing this sentiment, Vijay Chauthaiwale pointed to India’s internal transformation as a key driver of its international standing. He described the country as increasingly being viewed as “a land of opportunities,” citing the dramatic expansion of digital infrastructure. Internet usage in India has surged to around one billion users, integrating millions into the digital economy and enhancing the country’s global competitiveness.
The conference also addressed the evolving contours of India-US cooperation, particularly in defence, technology, and energy sectors. Juster described India’s approach as “multi-alignment,” enabling it to deepen ties with Washington while maintaining relationships with other global powers. However, he acknowledged that recent developments under the administration of Donald Trump have introduced strains into the bilateral relationship.
“These tensions have raised some concerns in India,” Juster said, referring to policy divergences and trade disputes. Despite this, he expressed confidence that the foundational strength of the partnership would ensure its long-term continuity.
Trade emerged as a contentious issue during the discussions. Priyanka Chaturvedi, a former Member of Parliament, criticized aspects of ongoing tariff negotiations, pointing out that duties imposed on Indian goods had risen to 18 percent. She questioned the feasibility of ambitious bilateral trade targets, particularly the goal of reaching $500 billion, and highlighted sensitivities surrounding India’s agriculture and dairy sectors.
The role of the Indian diaspora in shaping bilateral ties was another focal point. Chauthaiwale emphasized that Indian-Americans are far from a monolithic group, with diverse perspectives influenced by issues such as immigration policies and trade relations. This diversity, he noted, adds complexity to how diaspora politics intersects with diplomatic priorities.
Regional diplomacy also featured prominently in the discussions. Chauthaiwale pointed to renewed engagement with neighboring countries, including Bangladesh and Nepal, where recent political developments present opportunities for recalibrating ties. These efforts reflect India’s broader strategy of strengthening its immediate neighborhood while expanding its global footprint.
The conference brought together diplomats, policymakers, and experts to assess India’s role at what organizers described as a critical inflection point in US-India relations. Juster stressed that India’s rise will be one of the defining geopolitical developments of the 21st century, arguing that it is in the mutual interest of both nations for the United States to play a constructive role in that trajectory.

Over the past two decades, the US-India partnership has expanded significantly across multiple domains, including defence cooperation, trade, and advanced technologies.
