Legal Metrology Department raids Basundhara Jewellers in Agartala after consumer complaints, seizes expired weighing machines, warns of strict legal action amid Akshay Tritiya rush, highlighting urgent concerns over transparency, accuracy, and consumer trust in gold trade practices.
A sudden enforcement action disrupted normal business operations at a prominent jewellery outlet in Agartala on Wednesday, as officials moved in following consumer complaints about discrepancies in measurement practices. The inspection was carried out by a team from the Department of Legal Metrology, Sadar, targeting alleged irregularities in the weighing of precious metals.
According to officials present during the operation, the raid was prompted by formal complaints submitted by customers who suspected inaccuracies in the weight of gold ornaments sold at the store. Acting on these reports, authorities conducted an unannounced inspection at Basundhara Jewellers, one of the city’s well-known jewellery establishments.
During the inspection, the team discovered that three weighing machines used for measuring gold, silver, and other ornaments had not been verified within the required timeframe. Officials confirmed that the machines had exceeded their validity period by more than a year, violating standard legal metrology regulations. These instruments are required to undergo periodic verification to ensure accuracy and protect consumer interests.
The department immediately seized the outdated machines and initiated further procedural steps. An official stated that the shop management has been instructed to complete the necessary verification process by the end of the day. Failure to comply with these directives may lead to legal consequences under the relevant provisions of the law.
“The raid was conducted after receiving credible consumer complaints. Ensuring fairness and transparency in trade practices remains our priority,” an अधिकारी said while addressing the media.

The timing of the raid has added to its significance, as jewellery shops across Agartala are currently experiencing increased footfall due to the festive occasion of Akshay Tritiya. This period is traditionally associated with high gold purchases, making accurate measurement practices crucial for maintaining consumer trust.
Authorities have reiterated their commitment to safeguarding consumer rights and have urged businesses to strictly adhere to legal standards. The department also encouraged customers to report any suspected malpractice, emphasizing that swift action will be taken to address such concerns.
