An 85-year-old woman in Tripura’s Khowai district was hospitalised after alleged brutal assault by her son. Police launched investigation as victim suffered multiple injuries, highlighting growing concerns over elder abuse and domestic violence in vulnerable households.

An 85-year-old woman was admitted to a hospital after allegedly being brutally assaulted and forced out of her home by her own son in the Khowai district of Tripura, police officials confirmed on Monday. The disturbing incident has raised fresh concerns over the safety and welfare of senior citizens in vulnerable domestic environments.

The victim, identified as Rasbala Sarkar, originally hails from Taidu village. For the past several years, she had been residing as a tenant in the Koraillong area under Teliamura subdivision. She lived with her youngest son, Nakul Sarkar, who works as a driver. Her two other sons are no longer alive, leaving her largely dependent on Nakul for support.

According to her statement recorded by the police, the elderly woman had been subjected to repeated physical abuse over an extended period. She alleged that on Sunday, the violence escalated severely, with her son reportedly assaulting her throughout the day. The situation culminated in her being forcibly evicted from the house, leaving her injured and helpless.

The following morning, Rasbala Sarkar was discovered lying in a distressed condition near the Ghila Toli Ghat area in Kalyanpur. A local Accredited Social Health Activist (ASHA) worker, Seema Chakraborty, spotted the injured woman and immediately alerted emergency services. Her timely intervention is believed to have played a crucial role in ensuring that the victim received urgent medical attention.

With the assistance of fire service personnel, the elderly woman was promptly transported to Kalyanpur hospital. Doctors attending to her reported multiple injuries and visible bruises across her body, indicating sustained physical assault. Medical officials stated that she is currently under observation and receiving necessary treatment.

Law enforcement authorities have initiated an investigation into the case. Police confirmed that the victim’s statement has been formally recorded at the hospital. “We are examining all aspects of the allegations. Necessary legal action will be taken based on the findings of the investigation,” a police official said.

The incident has sparked outrage among local residents and social activists, who have called for strict action against those responsible for abuse of elderly individuals. Cases of domestic violence against senior citizens often go underreported, especially in rural and semi-urban areas, where victims may lack access to support systems or fear social stigma.

Authorities have reiterated the importance of community vigilance and timely reporting of such incidents. Social welfare groups have also urged families to ensure the dignity, safety, and care of elderly members, emphasizing that neglect and abuse must not be tolerated under any circumstances.
