A devastating ICU fire at Cuttack’s SCB Medical College and Hospital killed 11 patients and injured several others. Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Majhi ordered a judicial probe while Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced relief from PMNRF.
At least 11 patients were killed after a fire broke out in the trauma care Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Cuttack’s Government Medical College and Hospital , one of the Odisha’s largest medical colleges early today. The blaze erupted on the first floor of the unit where 23 patients were receiving treatment at 2.30 am to 3 am.
Among the several injured five of them in critical condition. Hospital staff and emergency responders evacuated the patients from the affected areas to other units even as the fire tenders brought the flames under control. Several staff members suffered burn injuries during evacuation process.
Chief Minister Mohan Majhi visited the hospital and reviewed the situation. Majhi announced a Judicial probe into the incident and payment of ex-gratia of Rs 25 lakh each for the families of those patients died. He said as per the preliminary report fire was caused by a suspected short circuit in the trauma care intensive care unit.
Eleven employees of the biggest medical college of Odisha who took part in the rescue operation were hospitalised after suffering health complications, including smoke inhalation.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep grief over the mishap and extended his condolences to the families of those who lost their lives . PM office in a communication said Rs 2 lakh from PMNRF would be given to the next of kin of each deceased.
