Former Tripura Deputy CM Jishnu Dev Varma sworn in as 22nd Governor of Maharashtra in Mumbai ceremony. Bombay High Court Chief Justice administered oath as top leaders including Devendra Fadnavis and Eknath Shinde welcomed the new constitutional head.
Former Tripura Deputy Chief Minister and member of the Tripura royal family, Jishnu Dev Varma, was sworn in on Tuesday as the 22nd Governor of Maharashtra in a formal ceremony held at the Darbar Hall of Maharashtra Lok Bhavan in Mumbai.
The oath of office was administered by Justice Shree Chandrashekhar, the Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court. The ceremony was attended by top political leaders and senior officials of the state government.

Among those present were Devendra Fadnavis, Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, and Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Pawar, who extended their congratulations to the newly sworn-in Governor by presenting bouquets and greeting him after the ceremony.
Soon after taking the oath, Governor Jishnu Dev Varma was accorded a ceremonial Guard of Honour by the Indian Navy, symbolising the formal assumption of his constitutional responsibilities as the head of the state.
The appointment comes after a significant development in the country’s constitutional offices. Following the election of former Maharashtra Governor C. P. Radhakrishnan as the Vice President of India on September 12, 2025, the additional charge of the Governor of Maharashtra was temporarily handed over to Acharya Devvrat, who serves as the Governor of Gujarat. With the swearing-in of Jishnu Dev Varma, Maharashtra now has a full-time Governor once again.
Before the oath-taking ceremony, Rajesh Aggarwal, the Chief Secretary of Maharashtra, read out the official warrant of appointment issued by Droupadi Murmu in both Hindi and English. The ceremony followed traditional protocol and began with the national song Vande Mataram, followed by the Jana Gana Mana and the Maharashtra state song. The event concluded with the police band performing Vande Mataram and the National Anthem.

Prior to his new role, Jishnu Dev Varma served as the Governor of Telangana from July 31, 2024. His political career in Tripura has been marked by several key leadership positions. From 2018 to 2023, he served as Deputy Chief Minister of Tripura, handling crucial portfolios including Finance, Rural Development, and Power. During his tenure, he played a major role in shaping the state’s fiscal management and rural development initiatives.
Apart from politics and governance, Dev Varma is widely known for his contributions to art and culture. A passionate connoisseur of modern art, painting, and sculpture, he served as the Convener of the Tripura chapter of Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage and coordinated the organisation’s activities across Northeast India.
