PM Modi pays tribute to Biju Patnaik on his 110th birth anniversary, recalling his visionary leadership, industrial reforms, global legacy, and enduring impact on Odisha’s development and the Biju Janata Dal’s mission.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday paid heartfelt tributes to legendary Odisha leader Biju Patnaik on the occasion of his 110th birth anniversary, remembering his unwavering passion for the progress and development of Odisha. The Prime Minister highlighted Patnaik’s visionary leadership and enduring contribution to the state’s growth trajectory.

Taking to X, PM Modi honored the late statesman and recalled his commitment to transforming Odisha into a strong industrial and economic hub. “On his birth anniversary today, I pay tributes to Shri Biju Patnaik Ji and remember his passion towards furthering the progress of Odisha,” the Prime Minister wrote, emphasizing the leader’s enduring relevance in India’s political and developmental history.

Biju Patnaik, a towering figure in Odisha politics, served as the Chief Minister of Odisha twice — first from 1961 to 1963 and later from 1990 to 1995. During his tenures, he spearheaded major industrial and infrastructure initiatives that laid the foundation for the state’s modernization. His policies focused on long-term economic stability, industrial growth, and improved connectivity.

Among his landmark achievements was the establishment of Paradip Port, which became a crucial maritime gateway boosting trade and commerce in eastern India. The development of the Choudwar-Barbil industrial belts also played a transformative role in strengthening Odisha’s industrial ecosystem, creating employment opportunities and attracting investments.

Beyond industrial reforms, Patnaik was widely recognized for his progressive governance. He pioneered reservations for women in local governance institutions, a bold step that was far ahead of its time and significantly enhanced women’s political participation at the grassroots level. His inclusive policies and decisive leadership earned him the title “Hero of Kalinga,” symbolizing courage, resilience, and dedication.

Biju Patnaik’s influence extended beyond state politics. He was internationally acknowledged for his role during World War II and for his diplomatic efforts that enhanced India’s global standing. In a rare honor reflecting his global impact, he remains the only Indian leader whose mortal remains were draped in the national flags of India, Russia, and Indonesia after his passing — a testament to his international contributions and goodwill.

Earlier in the day, his son Naveen Patnaik, Leader of the Opposition in the Odisha Assembly and former Chief Minister, also paid rich tributes to his father. In his message, Naveen Patnaik described Biju Patnaik as a “great people’s hero and pride of the Odias,” reaffirming his lasting inspiration for millions.

He further emphasized that the ideals of Biju Patnaik continue to guide every worker of the Biju Janata Dal (BJD). According to Naveen Patnaik, the party remains dedicated to the service of Odisha, inspired by the late leader’s ethos of inclusive growth and collective progress.

The Biju Janata Dal also issued a tribute, describing him as a valiant son of Odisha who devoted his life to the service of both the state and the nation. The party likened his courage to “an eagle in a storm,” underscoring his fearless leadership and relentless efforts to elevate Odisha to new heights.

His legacy remains deeply embedded in Odisha’s political and developmental narrative, serving as a guiding force for future generations.
