Iran names Ayatollah Alireza Arafi as interim Supreme Leader after Ali Khamenei’s death in a reported US-Israeli airstrike. A transitional council assumes authority as the Assembly of Experts prepares to appoint a permanent successor.

Iran has appointed Ayatollah Alireza Arafi as the country’s interim Supreme Leader, hours after the reported killing of long-time leader Ali Khamenei in a US-Israeli airstrike targeting his residential compound in Tehran. The announcement marks a dramatic and unprecedented moment in the Islamic Republic’s political history, triggering an immediate leadership transition under constitutional provisions.

Iranian authorities confirmed on Sunday that Khamenei, who had served as Supreme Leader since 1989, was killed in the strike. His leadership spanned more than three decades, shaping Iran’s domestic governance, regional strategy, and relations with global powers. Khamenei assumed the role following the death of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the architect of the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

Following the announcement of Khamenei’s death, the government declared that a three-member transitional council would temporarily oversee the country’s leadership. According to the state-run Islamic Republic News Agency, the council comprises President Masoud Pezeshkian, Judiciary Chief Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei, and a jurist selected from the Guardian Council.

Under Iran’s constitution, this council is empowered to carry out the Supreme Leader’s responsibilities until a permanent successor is chosen by the Assembly of Experts, an 88-member clerical institution vested with ultimate authority over the country’s political system, armed forces, and key state institutions. The Assembly is expected to convene in the coming days to deliberate on the appointment of a new Supreme Leader.

Ayatollah Arafi’s appointment as interim leader places a prominent religious scholar and jurist at the helm during a highly sensitive period. Born in 1959 in Meybod, central Iran, Arafi is a respected Shia cleric with deep institutional experience. He currently serves as head of Iran’s Centre for the Management of Islamic Seminaries and has been Director of the prestigious Qom Seminary since 2016, a position that underscores his influence within Iran’s clerical establishment.

Arafi is also a member of the powerful Guardian Council, the constitutional watchdog responsible for vetting legislation and overseeing elections. His longstanding involvement in Iran’s religious and political institutions has positioned him as a figure of continuity within the Islamic Republic’s ideological framework.

From 2008 to 2018, Arafi served as President of Al-Mustafa International University, an institution known for educating foreign students in Islamic studies and expanding Iran’s religious outreach globally. Since 2011, he has been a permanent member of the Supreme Council of the Cultural Revolution, a body that shapes the country’s educational and cultural policies.

The geopolitical implications of Khamenei’s reported death are significant. The alleged involvement of the United States and Israel in the airstrike could further escalate tensions in the Middle East, raising concerns about regional stability and potential retaliation. Iranian officials have yet to outline specific foreign policy responses, but analysts anticipate heightened security measures and diplomatic maneuvering in the coming weeks.

As Iran enters this transitional phase, both domestic and international observers are closely watching how the leadership reshuffle will influence the nation’s political trajectory, nuclear policy, and regional alliances. The coming decision by the Assembly of Experts will ultimately determine whether Ayatollah Arafi remains in power permanently or whether another cleric will emerge as Iran’s next Supreme Leader.
