The Indian National Congress on Monday extended its heartfelt greetings to the people of Tripura on the occasion of Kokborok Day, reaffirming its commitment to cultural diversity, linguistic preservation, and national unity. The party expressed hope that the observance would strengthen social harmony and instill pride in India’s rich and pluralistic heritage.
Kokborok Day, also known as Tripuri Language Day, is observed annually on January 19 in Tripura to promote, preserve, and celebrate the Kokborok language, one of the oldest indigenous languages of Northeast India. The day commemorates the historic moment in 1979 when Kokborok received official recognition from the Tripura government, marking a major milestone in the linguistic and cultural empowerment of the indigenous Tripuri community.
This year marks the 46th anniversary of Kokborok Day, an occasion that highlights the continuous efforts to revive and strengthen a language spoken for thousands of years. Kokborok remains a vital symbol of identity, tradition, and heritage for Tripura’s indigenous population, and its preservation is closely linked to safeguarding indigenous knowledge systems and cultural values.
Taking to social media platform X, the Congress party conveyed its message of solidarity and inclusiveness. In its post, the party stated that Kokborok Day commemorates the initial recognition of the language as an official medium in 1979 and expressed hope that the occasion would foster unity while inspiring pride in India’s diverse cultures and shared heritage.
Congress National President Mallikarjun Kharge also extended his personal greetings to the people of Tripura through a social media post. He described Kokborok as an ancient and culturally vibrant indigenous language that reflects the depth of India’s linguistic diversity. Kharge emphasized that celebrating Kokborok Day is not only about honoring a language but also about acknowledging the values of inclusiveness, respect, and coexistence that define India.
