Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha pays tribute to late Assembly Speaker Biswabandhu Sen, calling him a true public leader and cultural figure. Leaders recall his neutrality, dedication, and lasting contribution to Tripura politics and democratic values.
Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha today said that with the demise of Biswabandhu Sen, the people of Tripura have truly lost a public leader and cultural figure. He added that Sen had always played a neutral role in the Assembly.
Dr. Saha said this while addressing a memorial meeting of the late Speaker of the Tripura Legislative Assembly, Biswabandhu Sen, held at Nazrul Kalakshetra in Agartala today.
While speaking at the memorial meeting, Dr. Saha said that death is the only truth, yet people often do not want to accept it.
“We do not even think that death is inevitable. There are many people who are not remembered after they die. Therefore, every person should do such work that ensures they are remembered even after death. One such person is Biswabandhu Sen,” he said.
He recalled that when he was studying science at MBB College in 1971, Biswabandhu Sen was also a student there.
“We used to talk often. Even before that, whenever I went to Dharmanagar for various tasks, I would meet and talk with him. At that time, incidents of murder, terrorism, and bombings were taking place. MBB College was not an ideal place for studying. While studying there, Biswabandhu lived in the hostel. We were friends,” said Dr. Saha.
The Chief Minister said that after joining the Bharatiya Janata Party, he was given organizational responsibilities.
“I had to go to Dharmanagar for work. At that time, Sen was the MLA of Dharmanagar. Whenever I met him, he would introduce me to everyone as his friend. Whenever I went to Dharmanagar from Agartala, I found him to be one of the most reliable people. I travelled there many times by car or train. He always extended a helping hand and listened to all our discussions seriously,” he said.
Dr. Saha also mentioned that on August 8, Sen met him for the last time and they had tea together.
“He always thought about Dharmanagar. Later, I suddenly received the news that Biswabandhu Sen had fallen ill due to a brain haemorrhage. He was first taken to Tripura Medical College Hospital. After primary treatment, he was shifted to ILS Hospital through a Green Corridor with my escort. He was operated on by a specialist doctor. Later, arrangements were made, as per the wishes of his family members, to take him outside the state for better treatment. However, he ultimately succumbed to his illness. He had always resisted and protested against the communists, and his role in the conduct of the Legislative Assembly was also significant,” said Dr. Saha.

The memorial meeting was attended by Bharatiya Janata Party State President and MP Rajib Bhattacharya, Vice President Subal Bhowmik, Papiya Dutta, Tapas Bhattacharya, Deputy Speaker of the Legislative Assembly Ram Prasad Pal, former Speaker and MLA Ratan Chakraborty, Minister Sushanta Chowdhury, Tinku Roy, Kishore Barman, Mayor and MLA of the Agartala Municipal Corporation Dipak Majumdar, Chief Whip Kalyani Saha Roy, along with other public representatives and eminent persons.
