AMC is implementing Rs. 900-crore development projects across the city, targeting completion before monsoon. Key upgrades include drainage, roads, Smart City works, underground cabling, and enhanced traffic management to reduce public inconvenience during ongoing infrastructure expansion.
A massive development push worth nearly Rs. 900 crore is currently transforming the Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) area, with authorities setting an ambitious target to complete most ongoing works ahead of the upcoming monsoon season. The projects, which span multiple sectors—including the Smart City Mission, AMC infrastructure upgrades, Power Department initiatives, and Public Works Department (PWD) enhancements—are aimed at modernising Agartala’s core civic and public service systems.
Addressing the media at the State Secretariat on Wednesday, Urban Development Secretary Abhishek Singh said that although the simultaneous execution of multiple civic projects may lead to temporary challenges for residents, the administration is committed to ensuring that public inconvenience remains minimal.
“These disruptions are short-term and unavoidable when infrastructure expansion is carried out at such a large scale,” Singh stated. “However, several decisions have already been taken to reduce hardship for residents during the implementation phase.”
According to Singh, the government has directed all departments to accelerate work in the next 7 to 15 days so that the majority of the current phase can be completed before the rains intensify. To improve coordination and reduce traffic bottlenecks, a new operational plan has also been introduced. Under this system, no excavation will be allowed beyond 50–100 metres at a time, and the next phase of work can begin only after the previous one has been fully restored.
The Urban Development Secretary further stressed that departments must notify the Traffic Police before beginning any road or civic work. Proper barricading, safety markings, light indicators, and pedestrian guidance will be mandatory to maintain smooth movement of people and vehicles throughout the city.
During the press conference, AMC Chief Executive Officer Dilip Kumar Chakma provided a comprehensive update on the ongoing and upcoming Smart City projects. He confirmed that AMC is set to launch five new development initiatives shortly, continuing the momentum of urban transformation within municipal limits.
Chakma highlighted that several Smart City interventions—such as intelligent traffic management, beautification efforts, drainage upgrades, and roadmodernisation—are progressing at various stages. He also emphasised the administration’s priority of timely completion ahead of the monsoon to prevent disruption to daily life.
Adding to this, PWD Chief Engineer Rajib Majumder explained that the department is prioritising improved road connectivity and robust drainage systems across AMC areas. Under the upgraded drainage plan, a total of 13.10 km of drainage improvement work has been proposed. Out of this, 2.20 km is already under construction, while tenders for the remaining 10.90 km have been floated and are expected to be finalised soon.
Majumder assured residents that road closures or movement restrictions will be kept minimal. “Public movement will not be hindered during construction. We are closely monitoring the work to ensure smooth progress,” he said.
Meanwhile, Subir Sen, Director (Technical) of TSECL, revealed significant progress in the major underground power cabling initiative. He reported that 153 km of underground cabling within AMC jurisdiction was successfully completed in June this year. More stretches will be taken up in the coming months, further strengthening the city’s power infrastructure and reducing outage risks.
To ensure traffic flow remains uninterrupted during this development surge, Traffic SP Kishore Debbarma stated that the department is implementing special traffic-management measures. These include temporary diversions, strict monitoring of working zones, enhanced patrolling, and coordination with civic departments to resolve congestion points quickly.

Officials collectively emphasized that the short-term inconvenience caused by construction will pave the way for long-term gains—safer roads, improved power reliability, better drainage, and a more modern urban environment. With the monsoon deadline approaching, the administration is determined to deliver visible progress and ensure that Agartala continues on its path of rapid modernization.
