The new train halt at Pecharthal Railway Station on the Silchar–Agartala route brings major relief to North Tripura commuters, improving connectivity for students, traders, and daily passengers while strengthening regional rail services with enhanced accessibility and updated schedules.

The long-standing demand of thousands of residents across North Tripura finally turned into reality on Monday, as the Silchar–Agartala–Silchar passenger train began making scheduled halts at the Pecharthal Railway Station. The new stoppage marks a significant milestone in improving regional railway accessibility and is expected to transform the daily commute for people living in Pecharthal, Jampui, Laljuri, and Dasda blocks.

To commemorate the introduction of the new halt, the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) organized a special programme at the station. The event was attended by Minister Santana Chakma, B.K. Mina, Area Manager of NFR’s Badarpur Division, Pramod Chowdhury, ADSTE of Agartala, along with several NFR officials, local leaders, and residents from surrounding areas. The dignitaries ceremonially flagged the beginning of the service, marking the official commencement of the train’s first scheduled stop at Pecharthal Railway Station.

Residents of the region expressed immense satisfaction, calling the new halt a long-awaited and meaningful improvement. For years, people from this part of North Tripura have struggled with limited railway access, often needing to travel considerable distances to catch long-distance or regional passenger trains. With Pecharthal now officially included in the route, travel is expected to become significantly smoother, faster, and more reliable for students, government employees, traders, and daily commuters.

According to regular passengers, the new arrangement will especially benefit those who commute between Tripura and neighbouring Assam, as the Silchar–Agartala–Silchar route sees heavy daily movement. Students attending colleges in Dharmanagar and Kumarghat, traders transporting goods to border markets, and office-goers working in government departments expect a major reduction in both travel time and travel expenses.

The train schedule has also been updated accordingly. As per an official press release issued by the Northeast Frontier Railway, train No. 15663 (Agartala–Silchar) will now halt at Pecharthal, arriving at 14:01 hours and departing at 14:03 hours. In the return direction, train No. 15664 (Silchar–Agartala) will arrive at 13:13 hours and depart at 13:15 hours. The inclusion of Pecharthal is expected to enhance connectivity across multiple key destinations, providing commuters with more flexibility and convenience.

Local residents attending the ceremony highlighted that Pecharthal Railway Station had long been underutilized despite its strategic location and the high population density of the surrounding blocks. The formal addition of the halt is expected to change this dynamic, potentially increasing passenger footfall and making the station a more active transit hub for North Tripura.

Officials from NFR emphasized that the decision was taken after persistent demands from the local population and a detailed review of passenger needs in the region. They also assured that more steps will be taken in the future to strengthen railway infrastructure in Tripura, including improved passenger amenities, better platforms, enhanced security measures, and more frequent services as demand rises.

The new halt has triggered optimism among local businesses as well. Traders believe that easier access to rail services will help boost local commerce, agricultural trade, and small-scale industries by enabling more efficient movement of goods. Improved connectivity is also expected to encourage tourism, particularly to the scenic Jampui Hills, known for its orange orchards and cool climate.

For many families living in remote pockets of North Tripura, railway connectivity plays a crucial role in accessing healthcare, education, and essential services. With the Pecharthal halt now operational, communities hope for reduced travel burdens and better integration with major towns such as Agartala, Silchar, Dharmanagar, and Kumarghat.

The introduction of the new halt at Pecharthal Railway Station reflects a continuing effort by the Indian Railways to expand and modernize transport networks in the Northeast. As regional rail services grow stronger, the promise of faster, safer, and more inclusive mobility becomes a reality for more and more people in Tripura.

The addition of this halt is not just a matter of convenience — it represents progress, development, and a renewed commitment to addressing the needs of commuters who rely heavily on railways for their daily lives. With the updated schedule now in effect, Pecharthal is set to emerge as a vital link in the region’s expanding transportation network.
