Sensex and Nifty End Flat with Slight Losses; Broader Markets Show Negative Bias

Benchmark domestic equity indices, the Sensex and the Nifty, ended the session on a flat note with a slight negative bias. Today, indices opened on a positive note but after a range bound trade closed in the red. The Sensex fell 14 points, to close at 85 thousand 707, while the Nifty dipped 13 points, to settle at 26 thousand 203. The broader market indices at the Bombay Stock Exchange closed in negative territory. The Mid-Cap index remained on a flat note with negative bias, while the Small-Cap index fell over 0.1 per cent.
 
In the Sensex pack, 19 out of 30 companies edged downward. Among the top laggards, Powergrid shed over 1.3 per cent, Eternal fell more than 0.8 per cent and Bharti Airtel lost 0.7 per cent. In the top gainers, Mahindra and Mahindra surged over two per cent, Sun Pharma rose almost 1.2 per cent and Kotak Bank added 0.8 per cent. 
 
Across sectoral indices at the BSE, 12 out of 21 sectors ended with losses. Among the key decliners, Oil and Gas slipped almost one per cent, Telecommunication dipped 0.9 per cent and Energy decreased over 0.6 per cent.
 
Among the top gainers, Auto gained over half a per cent, Healthcare rose nearly 0.4 per cent, and FMCG as well as Metal, both added more than 0.2 per cent.  
 
The overall market breadth at the BSE was negative, as shares of 2,128 companies declined, 2,019 advanced, and 165 remained unchanged.
