Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha emphasises India’s hallmark of unity in diversity while inaugurating a new Manipuri community temple in Agartala, highlighting cultural preservation, development initiatives, and the government’s commitment to uplifting all ethnic groups across the Northeastern region.

Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha on Saturday reaffirmed that “unity in diversity” remains one of India’s most distinctive and cherished hallmarks, underscoring the nation’s foundational strength that binds its people together despite vast cultural, linguistic, and geographical variations.

Speaking at the inauguration of the newly built pucca temple house of Puthiba Devta Bari in Abhaynagar—an important place of worship for Tripura’s Manipuri community—Saha emphasised that harmony among all communities is a value the state and the country must continuously protect and nurture. The temple, located on the outskirts of Agartala, has been reconstructed with an investment of Rs 74 lakh provided by the state government.

Addressing the gathering, the Chief Minister highlighted how the Northeastern region, though diverse in traditions and identities, stands united through a deep cultural bond. “Despite the diversity among the states of the Northeast, there exists a strong sense of unity that connects us all. The exchange of culture, tradition, and social practices forms an essential bridge that strengthens this unity,” Saha said.

He noted that the Manipuri community occupies a significant place in Tripura’s cultural landscape and carries a legacy that spans several centuries. “The culture and traditions of the Manipuris are very ancient and form an integral part of the country’s history. Their presence in Tripura is historically linked to the royal era, and their contributions remain invaluable,” he added.

Saha, who also holds the Information and Cultural Affairs portfolio, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protecting and promoting the heritage of every community living in the state. He said that development initiatives are being implemented to preserve the distinct identities of ethnic groups, tribes, and castes that together shape the state’s rich cultural fabric.

“The state government is committed to the preservation and development of the culture and traditions of every community, including castes and tribes. For this purpose, the government is working by adopting various strategic plans and welfare schemes,” he said.

The Chief Minister also praised the artistic excellence of the Manipuri community, particularly their globally recognised contributions in dance, drama, and handloom craftsmanship. “The dance, drama, and handloom artistry of the Manipuris are well-known not only across India but also internationally. This is a matter of great pride, and it reflects the cultural brilliance of our country,” he remarked.

Saha further said that the government is working towards improving the socio-economic conditions of Manipuri families in Tripura. He highlighted the alignment of the state’s cultural and developmental efforts with the national vision inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

“Prime Minister Narendra Modi has always prioritised the spirit of unity in diversity. His vision for India emphasises cultural harmony, community empowerment, and the upliftment of every ethnic group. In Tripura, we are following this vision to ensure that no community is left behind in the journey of progress,” the Chief Minister said.

The event witnessed the participation of several notable dignitaries, reflecting the importance of the ceremony for both Tripura and the Manipuri community. Among those present were Rajya Sabha Member from Manipur Maharaja Sanajaoba Leishemba, former Manipur minister and current MLA Suchindra Meitei, Secretary of Puthiba Welfare and Cultural Society Dipak Kumar Sinha, Agartala Municipal Corporation Mayor and MLA Dipak Majumdar, West Tripura District Magistrate Dr. Vishal Kumar, social worker Papiya Dutta, and Puthiba Welfare and Cultural Society Advisor Niranjan Dutta.

Community leaders expressed gratitude to the government for constructing the new temple structure and for recognising the cultural significance of the Manipuri community. The inauguration marked an important moment for local residents, who view the temple not only as a place of worship but also as a symbol of their identity and heritage.
