The Australia-Canada-India Technology and Innovation Partnership, announced by PM Modi at the G20 Summit, aims to boost cooperation in emerging technologies, diversify supply chains, expand clean energy efforts, and promote AI adoption across three major democratic nations.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday announced a major new trilateral cooperation framework—the Australia-Canada-India Technology and Innovation (ACITI) Partnership—aimed at deepening technological collaboration among the three democratic nations. The announcement came during his meeting with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Johannesburg.

Describing the meeting as “excellent,” PM Modi said the new partnership is designed to strengthen cooperation in innovation, emerging technologies, supply chain resilience, and clean energy solutions. The ACITI initiative marks a strategic alignment between three influential Indo-Pacific and Atlantic partners, each seeking to advance shared values of openness, democracy, and sustainable development.

According to the Prime Minister, the initiative will enhance coordination across three continents and three oceans, fostering long-term collaboration in cutting-edge technological domains. “The initiative will deepen collaboration between democratic partners across emerging technologies, support diversification of supply chains, clean energy, and the mass adoption of AI,” PM Modi stated after the meeting.

A Framework for Global Technology Leadership

The ACITI Partnership is being positioned as a forward-looking framework that addresses some of the most pressing global challenges—ranging from energy transition to digital transformation. By pooling together expertise, resources, and technological capabilities, the three nations aim to create a robust ecosystem of innovation that benefits not only their citizens but also the global community.

One of the initiative’s core objectives is to promote innovation in emerging fields, including artificial intelligence, digital governance systems, quantum technologies, cybersecurity cooperation, and advanced manufacturing. With AI rapidly transforming global economies, the partnership aims to ensure adaptive regulatory frameworks, ethical development, and widespread adoption of AI-based solutions.

Strengthening and Diversifying Supply Chains

Another focus area of the ACITI Partnership is supply chain diversification, a critical challenge highlighted during recent global disruptions. Through this trilateral cooperation, India, Australia, and Canada will work to enhance the resilience of essential supply chains, reduce overdependence on single-country sources, and streamline trade flows across strategic sectors such as semiconductors, rare earth minerals, clean-tech components, and digital hardware.

The coordinated effort is expected to encourage joint research, technology-sharing agreements, and deeper industry-to-industry engagement. This collaborative approach aligns with India’s broader vision of becoming a global hub for manufacturing and innovation under key initiatives like Make in India and Digital India.

Advancing Clean Energy Solutions

Clean energy is another pillar of the ACITI initiative. As the world accelerates its shift toward sustainability, the three nations will collaborate on renewable technologies, decarbonization strategies, green hydrogen development, energy-efficient systems, and climate-resilient infrastructure.

PM Modi emphasized that the partnership will help catalyze global efforts toward carbon-neutral growth. Each of the three participating nations brings distinct strengths: Australia’s renewable energy capacity, Canada’s expertise in sustainable technologies, and India’s rapidly expanding clean-energy ecosystem.

A Vision for a Better Global Future

Expressing optimism about the future of this trilateral partnership, PM Modi said, “We look forward to working together to guarantee a better future for the coming generations.” He noted that the initiative reinforces India’s ongoing push for stronger global cooperation, technological progress, and inclusive development.

The announcement also comes on a day marked by other significant diplomatic engagements for the Prime Minister. During the G20 Summit, PM Modi called for a major rethinking of global development parameters, stressing the need for more resilient international systems to address emerging global threats. He proposed establishing a G20 mechanism to counter the drug-terror nexus and suggested setting up a global healthcare response team to enhance preparedness against pandemics and biological risks.

Key Diplomatic Meetings Alongside G20 Engagements

Apart from the trilateral meeting with Albanese and Carney, PM Modi met British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. Describing the meeting with Guterres as “very productive,” the Prime Minister highlighted ongoing cooperation in climate action, multilateral reforms, and global peace initiatives.

The ACITI Partnership is expected to serve as one of the landmark takeaways from this year’s G20 Summit, symbolizing a growing strategic convergence among India, Australia, and Canada. As the three democracies move forward with shared technological goals, the partnership is expected to accelerate innovation, strengthen supply chain security, and enhance global collaboration in the digital era.
