Violent Clashes Erupt Near Bangladesh Parliament Ahead of July Charter Signing

Must Read

The area surrounding Bangladesh’s Parliament turned into a scene of violent confrontation today as protesters clashed with police and security forces while attempting to rally ahead of the signing of the July National Charter. The demonstrators – comprising those injured in the July Uprising of 2024 and families of the slain – gathered near the Parliament premises on Manik Mia Avenue, Dhaka for a sit-in. They vowed not to leave until their key demands were included in the Charter, including official recognition as “July injured heroes” and guaranteed social security.
Tensions escalated when military and police personnel barred the protesters from entering the Parliament complex. The situation quickly turned violent as law enforcers resorted to baton charges and fired three rounds of sound grenades to disperse the agitated crowd.
In retaliation, protesters vandalised police vehicles – including a car and a bus – and set fire to a temporary reception area and control room built in front of the MP Building for the Charter signing ceremony. Witnesses reported scenes of chaos as furniture and installations were destroyed amid chants denouncing the interim government.
Security forces, including the Army, RAB, BGB, SWAT, and police, were swiftly deployed to regain control.
