Senior citizens of Jampui Hill celebrated the International Day of Older Persons with community recognition, dignitary addresses, and cultural events, highlighting their active participation, advocacy, and invaluable contributions to social, cultural, and developmental initiatives in the region.

Thanzauva Hall, Hmunpui, Jampui Hill came alive today as hundreds of senior citizens gathered to observe the International Day of Older Persons in a spirited celebration organized by the Mizo Upa Pawl (MUP) – the Mizo Senior Citizens’ Association of Jampui Hill Area. With 692 active members spread across ten branches throughout the hill range, MUP has consistently championed the welfare and well-being of the region’s elderly population.

The programme commenced under the stewardship of Mr. LT Muana Royte, President of MUP, who presided over the event. Mr. Lalthanzuala Sailo, Secretary of MUP, introduced the distinguished guests, creating a warm and inclusive atmosphere for the attendees. Among the dignitaries present was Mr. BC Nunga, BAC Chairman of Jampui Hill RD Block, who delivered goodwill messages from the Hon’ble Chief Minister Prof. (Dr) Manik Saha and Hon’ble Minister Smt. Santana Chakma. Mr. Nunga highlighted numerous state and central government initiatives directed toward elderly welfare, reflecting the government’s commitment to senior citizens’ social and economic well-being.

This year’s event carried special significance with the presence of Mr. PC Vanlalruata, Hon’ble Agriculture Minister of Mizoram, as the Chief Guest. In his address, Mr. Vanlalruata conveyed that despite invitations from his own constituency in Mizoram, he chose to attend the Jampui Hill celebration due to his deep personal attachment to the region. He expressed gratitude to the Government of Tripura for its sustained support to the Mizo community through the development of good roads, electricity, tourism infrastructure, and other essential amenities—initiatives that, according to the Minister, often serve as exemplars for Mizoram.

Focusing on the future, Mr. Vanlalruata underscored the significance of collaborative efforts between Mizoram and Tripura in promoting climate-resilient, sustainable, and organic agriculture on Jampui Hill. He lauded the invaluable role of senior citizens, asserting that their accumulated wisdom and experience remain crucial in navigating the challenges of the 21st century.

Adding further depth to the programme, Dr. Zairemthiama Pachuau reflected on the status and contributions of older persons in Jampui Hill in alignment with this year’s global theme: “Older Persons Driving Local and Global Action: Our Aspirations, Our Well-Being, Our Rights.” Dr. Pachuau emphasized three key aspects:

  • Active Participation: Senior citizens are not merely recipients of care but active agents shaping their communities and contributing to global initiatives.

  • Advocacy: Older persons should voice their aspirations, advocate for their rights, and demand protection to ensure their well-being.

  • Inclusion: By centering the rights and welfare of elderly individuals, society can move toward a more inclusive and equitable future for all generations.

A poignant moment was observed to honor 23 elderly members who passed away over the past year, followed by special recognition for five living elders aged 90 years and above. This gesture symbolized the community’s deep respect for their longevity, achievements, and enduring contributions to social and cultural life.

The event’s vibrancy was further enhanced by the participation and support of several regional organizations, including the Mizo Convention, Tripura Group YMA, Jampui Block MHIP (women’s association), and the Langkaih Area MUP from across Mizoram. These collaborations underscored the cross-border cultural and social unity shared by the Mizo community.

The day concluded on a celebratory note, with renewed recognition of the pivotal role played by senior citizens in shaping the social, cultural, and developmental landscape of Jampui Hill. The event reaffirmed that the wisdom, experience, and active participation of older persons remain indispensable assets for both local and global progress.

Through such commemorations, the Mizo Upa Pawl continues to reinforce the message that older persons are not only custodians of tradition but also active contributors to the aspirations and well-being of their communities.
