Estonia says Russian fighter jets violated its airspace

Must Read

Estonia has said Russia violated its airspace with the incursion of three supersonic fighter jets. Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna has said that three MiG-31s entered Estonian airspace over the Gulf of Finland in the north for a total of 12 minutes yesterday.

The Foreign Minister added that he had summoned the charge d’affaires at the Russian embassy over the violation. Estonia’s foreign ministry has condemned the incursion as brazen.

Later the day, Estonian Prime Minister Kristen Michal requested urgent NATO Article 4 consultations on the incursion. Under Article 4 of the NATO treaty, any member can convene urgent talks if they believe their territorial integrity, political independence or security are at risk.

A Nato spokesperson said the military alliance responded immediately and intercepted the Russian aircraft.

Meanwhile, Russia denied violating Estonian airspace. Russia’s defence ministry said the jets were on a scheduled flight, in strict compliance with international airspace regulations and did not violate the borders of other states, as confirmed by objective monitoring.
