Tripura CM Dr. Manik Saha inspected preparations at Mata Tripura Sundari temple in Matabari ahead of Prime Minister Modi’s expected visit. Renovation works under the PRASAD scheme near completion, with a grand inauguration anticipated once the PM’s office confirms the date.

Preparations are in full swing at the historic Mata Tripura Sundari temple in Matabari, Udaipur, as the site gears up for a high-profile visit from Prime Minister Narendra Modi. On Sunday, Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha personally visited the revered temple to review the progress of renovation and development work being carried out under the Government of India’s PRASAD scheme.

The Mata Tripureswari Temple, popularly known as Matabari, holds immense cultural and spiritual significance for Hindus across the country. Regarded as one of the 51 revered Shakti Peethas, the temple attracts thousands of devotees every year, particularly during the Diwali festival, when the famous “Diwali Mela” is organized. Recognizing its historical and religious importance, the Ministry of Tourism launched a large-scale development project for the temple under the Pilgrimage Rejuvenation and Spiritual Augmentation Drive (PRASAD) scheme, with the aim of improving infrastructure and enhancing the experience for pilgrims and tourists.

High-Level Inspections at Matabari

On Saturday, a team of senior police officials visited the temple premises to assess security arrangements ahead of the Prime Minister’s scheduled visit. The following day, Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, accompanied by Finance Minister Pranajit Singha Roy, local MLA Abhishek Deb Roy, and other senior officials, undertook a comprehensive inspection of the ongoing development works within the temple complex.

During his tour, Dr. Saha carefully reviewed the renovation works, which officials confirmed are nearly 80 percent complete. The Chief Minister visited different parts of the temple premises, taking stock of improvements being made to the pathways, entry points, and other public amenities. He also stressed the importance of beautification, particularly by planting more flowering plants and greenery around the temple, to enhance the spiritual ambiance of the holy site.

Awaiting the Prime Minister’s Visit

Speaking to reporters after the inspection, Dr. Saha said that the final date of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit has not yet been confirmed. “We are keeping all preparations ready. Let us see when he can find time to come,” he remarked.

According to officials, the project is expected to reach completion by the end of this month, with only finishing touches remaining. Once the Prime Minister’s office finalizes the date, the temple is likely to host a grand inauguration ceremony marking a new chapter in its history.

PRASAD Scheme and Temple Development

The development of the Mata Tripura Sundari temple under the PRASAD scheme represents a significant milestone in Tripura’s cultural tourism initiatives. The project includes renovation of the main temple premises, construction of improved visitor amenities, upgraded lighting systems, enhanced security, and the development of approach roads.

Special attention is also being given to landscaping and beautification to ensure that the temple’s heritage charm is preserved while offering modern facilities to pilgrims.

Officials believe that once the project is inaugurated, the temple will not only draw a greater number of domestic visitors but also attract international tourists interested in India’s rich spiritual heritage.

This, in turn, is expected to boost local businesses, generate employment opportunities, and place Udaipur more prominently on India’s pilgrimage tourism map.

Significance of Mata Tripura Sundari Temple

Located about 55 kilometers from Agartala, the temple is dedicated to Goddess Tripureswari, an incarnation of Goddess Parvati. As one of the Shakti Peethas, the site holds deep religious significance, as it is believed to be the place where the right foot of Goddess Sati fell. The temple is also architecturally notable, designed in a typical Bengali hut style with a square sanctum.

For centuries, devotees have flocked to the temple, seeking blessings and participating in rituals. The government’s recent efforts to modernize infrastructure without compromising on cultural values reflect a delicate balance between preservation and progress.

All Eyes on the Inauguration

With nearly 80 percent of the work completed and the finishing stages underway, the focus now rests on the Prime Minister’s arrival. Once the date is officially confirmed, the state government plans to ensure that the inauguration is conducted on a grand scale, showcasing both the cultural heritage of Tripura and the modern facilities provided under the PRASAD scheme.
