Durga Puja 2025 preparations begin in Tripura with 55 days left. Agartala gears up for grand festivities as clubs unveil unique themes—ranging from Buddhist temples to mobile addiction awareness. Pandal construction starts, drawing excitement for the state’s biggest cultural celebration with over 20 lakh participants expected.

With just 55 days to go, the countdown to Durga Puja, the grandest festival of eastern India, has officially begun in Tripura, especially in the capital city Agartala, where celebrations are marked by massive public participation and vibrant cultural displays. The early signs of festivity are already visible as major community Puja organisers have begun construction of their elaborate theme-based marquees (pandals).

While Durga Puja remains the central attraction of the festive calendar, preparations for Ganesh Chaturthi and Manasa Puja are also underway, marking the start of the extended festive season that will continue through to Deepavali in October.

In Agartala, clubs and local community groups play a vital role in organising the Durga Puja festivities. Some clubs have already announced their Puja themes, showcasing a blend of artistic innovation and social awareness. Two major Puja committees—Aiakatan Juba Sanstha of Shantipara and Tushaar Sangha Club of Chandrapur—performed their Khuti Puja on Monday, the traditional ritual that marks the beginning of pandal construction by installing the first bamboo pole.

Themes with a Purpose

This year, Aiakatan Juba Sanstha has chosen to recreate the ambience of a Buddhist temple in Myanmar. Speaking to the media, a representative of the club said, “We believe this unique concept will attract people from all over the state. The serene aesthetics and architectural grandeur of Buddhist culture will be an artistic tribute to the spirit of peace and harmony.”

In contrast, Tushaar Sangha Club has opted for a thought-provoking theme addressing a very modern concern—mobile phone addiction among children. “We have seen how mobile phones have taken away the essence of childhood. Kids are now confined to their screens rather than enjoying outdoor games or spending time with family,” said one of the club’s members. “Through our theme, we want to spread awareness among parents about the impact of excessive screen time and digital dependence.”

The Tushaar Sangha Club has been organising Durga Puja for the past 60 years, and each year they choose a socially relevant theme. This year’s message aims to resonate deeply with families, especially in the digital age where screen overuse has become a major health and psychological concern.

Agartala Braces for the Festive Crowd

Durga Puja in Agartala is not just a religious celebration but also a cultural carnival that brings the city to life with lights, decorations, music, and food. According to a rough estimate provided by the Agartala Municipal Corporation, over 20 lakh people are expected to participate in pandal hopping during the four days of Durga Puja. The festive spirit generally kicks in by Chaturthi and Panchami evenings, when pandals are thrown open to the public and city roads come alive, although formal traffic restrictions begin later to manage the surge in crowds.

Many pandals are being designed with interactive exhibits, artistic installations, and eco-friendly materials, as organisers focus on sustainability alongside creativity. Several community pujas have also started collaborating with local artisans and students to make the decorations more inclusive and locally sourced.

Festivities Ahead

The festive spirit will formally begin with Manasa Puja at the end of this month, followed by Ganesh Chaturthi, Durga Puja, and ultimately Deepavali. Each festival adds its own flavour to the celebratory atmosphere across Tripura, but Durga Puja remains the showstopper, deeply embedded in the cultural ethos of the region.
