Nation remembers Shaheed Udham Singh on 86th Martyrdom Day

Must Read

The Nation pays homage to the great revolutionary, Shaheed Udham Singh, on his 86th martyrdom day today. Belonging to the Ghadar Party and Hindustan Socialist Republic Association (HSRA), he assassinated Michael O’Dwyer, the former Lieutenant Governor of British Punjab, on 13 March 1940 in revenge for the Jallianwala Bagh massacre in Amritsar in 1919.

Akashvani Correspondent reports that the disturbing memory of the Jallianwala Bagh massacre kept haunting him till the time he shot Michael O’Dwyer dead in London’s Caxton Hall.

While in custody, he used the name ‘Ram Mohammad Singh Azad’, representing the three major religions in India and his anti-colonial sentiment. He was convicted of murder and hanged on this day in 1940.

To commemorate the martyrdom day of the legendary revolutionary, a state-level function will be organised at his birthplace place Sunam, today. The Punjab Government has announced a gazetted holiday, instead of a restricted holiday, to observe the martyrdom day of this great revolutionary.

The state government has also decided to name the Bhawanigarh-Sunam-Bhikhi-Kotshamir road as Shaheed Udham Singh Marg.
