Today is World Zoonotic Diseases Prevention Day. In India, the research by the ICMR has suggested that in order to eliminate dog-mediated rabies by 2030, India must fast-track its action through focused health approach.
 
           
ICMR has said that nearly 9.1 million animal bites and 5726 human rabies deaths due to dog bites are estimated to occur every year in India.
 
 
Eighty percent of the dog bite victims reported taking at least one vaccination. The primary objectives of the study is to estimate the incidence of animal bites and to estimate human rabies deaths by decision tree model.
 
 
The survey was done in 91 .2 percent households. The dog bite incident was higher among children aged 0 to 14 years and elderly aged above 60 years.
 
 
Among the dog bite victims 79.5 percent took at least one dose of anti rabies vaccine and it is estimated that 5726 human rabies deaths occur every year in India.
