Aadhaar face authentication hits record 15.87 cr in June 2025

Must Read

Aadhaar authentication transactions rose 7.8% to 229.33 crore in June 2025, reflecting India’s growing digital economy. AI-based face authentication and e-KYC services also hit record highs, boosting efficient welfare delivery and ease of business, according to the Ministry of Electronics and IT.

In a strong indicator of the deepening digital economy in India, Aadhaar-based authentication transactions reached a staggering 229.33 crore in June 2025. This marks a 7.8% increase compared to June 2024, showcasing the growing reliance on Aadhaar for identity verification and service access across sectors.

According to an official statement released on Thursday by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), this June’s transaction volume has not only surpassed that of the same month last year but also outpaced the preceding month of 2025. Since the inception of Aadhaar, the cumulative number of authentication transactions has now exceeded 15,452 crore.

The ministry attributed this growth to the widespread utility and ease of Aadhaar-based services, which have become integral to the digital lives of Indian citizens. It emphasized Aadhaar’s pivotal role as a “facilitator for effective welfare delivery” and as a catalyst for the ease of living, especially for millions of beneficiaries across the country.

Rise of Face Authentication

One of the most notable trends in the Aadhaar authentication ecosystem is the exponential rise in AI/ML-powered face authentication. Developed in-house by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), Aadhaar’s face authentication solution recorded a record 15.87 crore transactions in June 2025 alone. This is a sharp jump from 4.61 crore face authentications in June 2024—more than a threefold increase.

To date, nearly 175 crore face authentication transactions have been completed. The ministry noted that this surge reflects the increasing adoption of this user-friendly, contactless, and secure modality. The AI-powered system works seamlessly across both Android and iOS platforms, allowing users to authenticate their identity using a simple face scan—bringing convenience while maintaining robust security standards.

Face authentication is now being leveraged by more than 100 entities, including government ministries, financial institutions, oil marketing companies, and telecom service providers. This has enabled smoother and faster delivery of benefits and services to the end users, streamlining operations and reducing delays caused by physical verification processes.

e-KYC Transactions Remain Strong

Another key highlight from the June data is the continued growth of Aadhaar-based electronic Know Your Customer (e-KYC) transactions. Over 39.47 crore e-KYC transactions were conducted in June 2025, underlining Aadhaar’s critical role in enhancing customer onboarding experiences across various sectors, particularly in banking and financial services.

The e-KYC service allows service providers to instantly verify customer credentials digitally, reducing paperwork, speeding up processes, and improving compliance. As a result, businesses across sectors, including both banking and non-banking financial institutions, are increasingly adopting Aadhaar e-KYC for operational efficiency.

Backbone of Digital Governance

The consistent rise in Aadhaar authentication, including biometric, OTP, and now face-based methods, underscores its importance in India’s digital governance framework. Aadhaar has evolved beyond its original identity role to become the foundation of multiple public service delivery mechanisms. From opening bank accounts and availing government subsidies to getting SIM cards and accessing health and education schemes, Aadhaar has become synonymous with digital empowerment in India.

This robust authentication infrastructure ensures that benefits reach the right beneficiaries and helps in curbing leakages and frauds in welfare schemes. Furthermore, Aadhaar’s role in enabling voluntary access to private services has enhanced consumer convenience, proving its dual utility in both public and private domains.

The jump in Aadhaar-based authentication transactions to over 229 crore in June 2025 marks yet another milestone in India’s journey towards a fully digital economy. With the continued adoption of innovative technologies such as AI-driven face authentication, and the strengthening of services like e-KYC, Aadhaar continues to serve as the cornerstone of digital inclusion, efficiency, and transparency in governance and beyond.
