Prime Minister Modi visited the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park (KNMP) in Accra today, accompanied by Ghana’s Vice President Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang. The memorial is dedicated to the prominent Ghanaian leader, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah. The complex is where the independence of Ghana was declared from British colonial rule in 1957.
The KNMP’s mausoleum houses the bodies of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah and his wife, Fathia Nkrumah. The building is meant to represent an upside-down sword, which in Akan culture is a symbol of peace. The mausoleum has a black star at its apex to symbolise unity.
