US opens student visa applications; talks ongoing with India on trade deal –

Must Read

US State Department Deputy Spokesperson Mignon Houston announced that student visa applications for the United States are now open and encouraged students to apply. She emphasised that all visa decisions are based on national security and that students must use their visas strictly for study purposes.

Speaking to a media agency, Houston stated that they want students to come to the US to study, not to cause disruptions or damage campus property. She highlighted that immigration policies are designed to protect both US citizens and international students.

On US-India relations, Houston described India as an essential partner in the Indo-Pacific region and said trade talks are ongoing. She stressed the importance of a fair and reciprocal trade relationship, consistent with the Trump administration’s America First policy.

The Deputy Spokesperson defended US tariffs, saying they address unfair trade practices that have harmed American farmers and industries. Talks for a Bilateral Trade Agreement between India and the US are continuing ahead of the July 9 deadline, which marks the end of a 90-day pause on reciprocal tariffs. Earlier, US President Donald Trump said a trade deal with India is likely soon, with reduced tariffs expected. However, India has taken a tough stance on agricultural issues, and its negotiators have extended their stay in Washington to reach an interim agreement.
