Kolkata/IBNS: CEO of Adani Ports and Special Economic Zones (APSEZ) Karan Adani Wednesday received the letter of award (LoA) on behalf of his corporation for building the Tajpur port in West Bengal.

This happened at the annual gathering held post puja by the state government. This year it was held at Eco Park, Rajarhat.

The formal LOA receiving event marked the beginning of developing what is being called as the first deep sea port of West Bengal.

Besides Adani, JSW Infrastructure had also submitted their bid for the 25,000 crore project.

Adani won the bid by a wafer thin margin in mid-March against the latter, as per media reports.

The breakup of the investment includes 15,000 crore earmarked for the greenfield port, and another 10,000 crore for related infrastructure work, as per media reports.

Sharing his excitement for the upcoming project, Karan Adani tweeted, Elated to share that @Adaniports has signed a LoI for Tajpur Port, West Bengals 1st Deep Sea Port. Were poised to build not just a port but a complete infrastructural ecosystem which will become a maritime gateway for the entire Eastern India.

We hope to start in 18 months, this is the natural time frame for a project of this magnitude, he told TOI.

The Tajpur port is expected to contain a draught of 12.1 metres, including a 18km channel.

At a tidal support of 3.9 metres, the port will boast of a 16 metre draught which could hold a capsize vessel of one lakh DWT.

The project that falls under the east Midnapur district when functional will create 25,000 direct jobs and a potential chance of one lakh indirect jobs, as per a state government release.
