President Droupadi Murmu inaugurated the Tripura State Judicial Academy and laid the foundation stone for Tripura National Law University at Narsingarh, Agartala.

She  begins her maiden two-day visit to Tripura today.

The President reached Agartala this morning and was received at the airport by Governor Satyadev Narayan, Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha and Union Minister of state for Social Justice and Empowerment Pratima Bhowmik. During the inauguration of Tripura State Judicial Academy and laid the foundation stone for Tripura National Law University by the President Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha, Law Minister Ratan Lal Nath, Chief Justice of Tripura High Court Justice Indrajit Mahanty, Justice A Gaud , Justice Arindam Lodh and Justice S G Chottopadhyaya were present during the programme.

According to sources National Law University, Tripura under the Higher Education Department of the state government, would now function from the Tripura Judicial Academy as both are adjacent places.

Prof. (Dr.) Yogesh Pratap Singh has recently been appointed as first Vice-Chancellor of National Law University, Tripura, for which the state government has allotted 9.23 acres of land at Narsingarh for setting up of a permanent campus of the varsity.

Officials said that students from the northeastern and other states of India would be able to take higher studies on law in the University, first of its kind in the northeastern region. They said that in the Tripura Judicial Academy training would be provided to the judicial officers and officers of other departments of Tripura government, who are discharging judicial, quasi-judicial or administrative functions related to law.

In the academy, constructed on five acres of land and at a cost of Rs 23.33 crore, training would also be provided to the ministerial officers of the Tripura High Court, district judiciary and also to hold and conduct law lectures, conferences, seminars and competition in the field of law.

The visit follows former president Ram Nath Kovind’s visit to state in 2018. This is her first visit as President to any Northeastern state after assuming office early this year.
In the evening, the President will attend a civic reception to be hosted in her honour by the Government of Tripura at the Town Hall, Agartala.
Tomorrow, the president will flag off, the special extension of Guwahati-Kolkata-Guwahati train upto Agartala and extension of Agartala-Jiribam-Agartala Jan Shatabdi Express upto Khongsang, Manipur from Agartala Railway Station.
In the second leg of her visit, the President will visit Assam and virtually inaugurate and lay the foundation stones for various projects at IIT Guwahati.  In the evening, the President will attend a civic reception and cultural programme, to be hosted in her honour at the Assam Administrative Staff College, Guwahati.
On Friday, the President will virtually inaugurate and launch and lay the foundation stone for various developmental projects of the State and Union government. She will also flag off a train from Guwahati to Lumding.
