As part of a nationwide observance to mark the 50th anniversary of the imposition of Emergency in India – ‘Samvidhan Hatya Divas’ – a Punjab state level programme was organized at the state capital Chandiagrh, today.This solemn and reflective event was attended and addressed by the Governor of Punjab and Administrator, UT Chandigarh, Shri Gulab Chand Kataria, as the Chief Guest.In his keynote address, Shri Kataria reflected on the dark period of Emergency from 25th June 1975 to 21st March 1977. Describing it as a time when civil liberties were curtailed, press freedom was stifled, and democratic institutions were tested, he paid homage to those who stood resilient during the Emergency. He reiterated the importance of public awareness, vigilance, and constitutional morality in safeguarding democracy.He called the day not just a remembrance, but a renewal of the collective commitment to protect the Constitution and its foundational values – justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity.The state-level programme saw the participation of elected representatives, civil society members, youth volunteers, students, and citizens from diverse walks of life.
