Matthew McConaughey is reuniting with True Detective creator Nic Pizzolatto for a new feature film based on the classic detective Mike Hammer. Produced by Skydance, the film promises an epic noir narrative, marking McConaughey’s return to crime drama after a six-year acting hiatus.

Academy Award-winning actor Matthew McConaughey is set to collaborate once again with acclaimed writer and creator Nic Pizzolatto, nearly a decade after their iconic partnership on the first season of HBO’s True Detective. The duo is teaming up for a new cinematic project — a feature film based on the legendary private investigator character Mike Hammer.

According to Variety, the upcoming film is described as an “epic detective story” and will mark McConaughey’s return to the detective genre that helped redefine his career in 2014. That year, he starred alongside Woody Harrelson in the critically acclaimed first season of True Detective, a series that cemented both McConaughey and Pizzolatto’s reputations in the world of prestige television.

The new film is being developed by Skydance, which has acquired the rights to the Mike Hammer franchise, originally created by Mickey Spillane and later continued by Max Allan Collins. The franchise, known for its hard-boiled crime fiction and gritty narratives, has captivated readers for decades. Skydance plans to adapt this bestselling book series into a cinematic experience, with Pizzolatto penning the script and McConaughey in talks to star as the titular investigator.

The production lineup behind the project is equally impressive. David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, and Don Granger will produce the film for Skydance, joined by Guymon Casady of Entertainment 360. Additional producers include Benjamin Forkner and Ken F. Levin. Max Allan Collins will serve as executive producer, while Jane Spillane, widow of Mickey Spillane, will act as co-producer. Carin Sage is set to oversee the project on behalf of Skydance.

This collaboration between McConaughey and Pizzolatto is particularly exciting for fans of True Detective, which remains a benchmark in television crime drama. Pizzolatto’s storytelling style — rich in psychological complexity, existential themes, and noir atmospheres — fits naturally with the gritty world of Mike Hammer, a private eye known for his toughness, street smarts, and moral code.

McConaughey’s return to the screen comes after a six-year break from acting. His recent film, The Rivals of Amziah King, marked his re-entry into the industry. He is also set to star alongside America Ferrera in Apple TV+’s upcoming disaster thriller The Lost Bus. Speaking to Variety earlier this year, McConaughey reflected on his hiatus, saying, “I needed to write my own story, direct my own story on the page.” This period of self-reflection and personal development appears to have reignited his passion for acting — especially in stories that challenge and engage audiences.

Nic Pizzolatto, meanwhile, continues to be a force in both literary and screenwriting circles. An award-winning novelist and screenwriter, Pizzolatto earned multiple Emmy and Golden Globe nominations for True Detective, along with two Writers Guild Awards. His works have been translated into over 30 languages, and he has recently expanded into directing with his debut film Easy’s Waltz. He also has multiple projects currently in development with Skydance, making this partnership with McConaughey just one part of a broader creative renaissance.

The pairing of McConaughey and Pizzolatto for a film adaptation of Mike Hammer has all the ingredients for success: a compelling character, a proven creative team, and a legacy franchise with global recognition. While a release date has yet to be announced, the project is already generating significant buzz among fans of crime fiction and cinema alike.

As of now, there is no word on additional casting or a director, but given the talent already involved, expectations are high. With Skydance’s production power, Pizzolatto’s compelling writing, and McConaughey’s commanding screen presence, this reimagining of Mike Hammer is shaping up to be a must-watch for fans of classic detective tales with a modern edge.
