Must Read

On the occasion of the 300th birth anniversary of Lokmata Punyashloka Ahilyadevi Holkar, a special program has been organized today at her birthplace Chaundi in Ahilyanagar district of Maharashtra. On this occasion, various development works will be inaugurated in Chaundi. Our correspondent takes a look at the life and works of Ahilyadevi Holkar:

Lokmata Punyashlok Ahilyabai Holkar, was born on 31 May,1725, in the village of Choundi, in Ahilyanagar district. She married Khande Rao, the son of the brave Maratha leader Malhar Rao Holkar. Sadly, Khande Rao died heroically in battle. After his death, Ahilyabai chose to dedicate her life to the welfare of the people.

She became a beacon of exemplary governance, laying the foundation for a fair, kind and compassionate administration. Ahilyabai implemented progressive policies for the betterment of various sections of society, including women, farmers, artisans, and tribals. Her work reached all over the country. She built ghats along rivers, restored many Hindu temples, and created rest houses and food centers for travellers.

After making Maheshwar in Madhya Pradesh her capital, she invited many artisans and weavers to the area, which helped the local textile industry to grow. Maheshwar is still a major center for textiles, and its famous sarees are known around the world. Ahilyabai Holkar’s life was a shining example of duty, kindness, fairness, people centric governance and leadership. Her legacy as a great ruler continues to inspire us even today.
