Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar likely to be next Prez of Afghanistan

Must Read

Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, who is the co-founder and deputy leader of the Taliban, is likely to be the next president of Afghanistan, media reports said.

The Taliban has taken control over Afghanistan after the US pulled out its troops from the South Asian country.

After days of fighting with the security forces and capturing territories, Taliban entered Kabul city on Sunday and took control over the Presidential Palace.

President Ashraf Ghani fled the country as the insurgents entered Kabul.

Scenes of desperation were witnessed at Kabul airport on Monday as hundreds of people, who are desperate to leave Afghanistan, clung on to a moving US Air Force C-17 aircraft on the tarmac.

Baradar arrived from Qatar, where he has spent months leading talks with the US and then Afghan peace negotiators.

He was arrested in Pakistan in 2010 but was freed in 2018 at the request of the Trump administration as American negotiator Zalmay Khalilzad considered him as a credible counterpart during talks in Qatar that led to the US withdrawal, reports said.
