Boris Johnson has decided to resign as British prime minister. Mr Johnson announced his resignation as Conservative Party leader after he was abandoned by his close allies in the wake of a series of scandals that rocked his government. 58-year Johnson said he will continue to serve as Prime Minister of UK until the Conservative Party chooses his successor.

His resignation will now trigger a fierce leadership battle within the Conservative Party, with MPs in the process of putting themselves forward for the race.

External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said that the resignation of British Prime Minister Boris Johnson is an internal development that India is closely watching. He said, UK is an important strategic partner and India has shared a multifaceted partnership and relationship.
