BSF ADG Mahesh Kumar Agrawal urges enhanced vigilance on the Indo-Bangladesh border amid changing regional dynamics and rising cross-border threats.
In light of evolving regional dynamics and rising security concerns, the Border Security Force (BSF) has called for increased vigilance along the India-Bangladesh border. This was underscored by BSF’s Additional Director General (ADG), Eastern Command, Mahesh Kumar Agrawal, during a comprehensive security review meeting at the Guwahati frontier, officials confirmed on Wednesday.
Agrawal, a senior IPS officer, emphasized the critical importance of maintaining maximum alertness along the 4,096-km-long international border shared with Bangladesh. He particularly noted the shifting political and security environment in Bangladesh and the persistent cross-border threats that demand robust surveillance and proactive response mechanisms.
During his inspection, ADG Agrawal was briefed by Inspector General Sukhdev Raj and other senior officers about the existing security framework and the BSF’s operational readiness in the region. The discussions also included detailed assessments of emerging challenges and ongoing efforts to combat cross-border crimes such as smuggling, illegal migration, and infiltration.
The ADG’s visit to Assam also included high-level discussions with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Agrawal informed the Chief Minister about various border management strategies and the security scenario in the region. In turn, Sarma commended the BSF for its exceptional dedication and efforts in securing Assam’s international boundary with Bangladesh.
Further strengthening coordination between state and central agencies, ADG Agrawal also met with Assam’s Director General of Police, Harmeet Singh. They exchanged views on the evolving security landscape and the necessity of continued synergy between the BSF and state police forces to maintain peace and stability along the border.
Agrawal took over as ADG (Eastern Command) earlier this month, replacing Ravi Gandhi, who has now assumed the position of ADG (Logistics) at the BSF Headquarters in Delhi.
The Eastern Command of the BSF is responsible for safeguarding India’s border with Bangladesh, spanning across five northeastern and eastern states — West Bengal (2,216 km), Tripura (856 km), Meghalaya (443 km), Mizoram (318 km), and Assam (263 km).
With a firm focus on proactive border management, ADG Agrawal’s visit and directives aim to bolster national security and ensure that the BSF continues its exemplary performance in protecting India’s eastern frontier.
