Sri Lanka is considering a floating solar power project with a capacity of 234 megawatts across four reservoirs as part of its renewable energy push.

Addressing the Parliament, Energy Minister Kumara Jayakody said that a feasibility study is underway for a 100MW floating solar plant in the Deduru Oya reservoir in Kurunegala and a 50MW plant in Ridigama Tank, Hambantota. He added that Environmental impact assessments have also begun.

The minister added that, additionally, the government plans two other floating solar projects with 50 and 34 MW capacity. Sri Lanka once relied entirely on hydroelectricity, but its energy mix has since diversified. The government aims to generate 70% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030. Floating solar projects are seen as key to reducing land use conflicts and boosting clean energy production.
