Australian captain Steve Smith expressed quiet confidence ahead of his team’s high-stakes semifinal clash against India, acknowledging the challenge of facing an unbeaten opponent while emphasizing Australia’s readiness for the conditions at Dubai International Cricket Stadium.

Despite an unusual tournament journey that included weather disruptions in Pakistan and a strategic early arrival in Dubai, Smith believes his team is well-prepared for today’s contest. With spin expected to play a crucial role on Dubai’s dry surfaces, Smith identified middle-over batting as the key battleground. “I think the game’s probably won and lost how we play this spin, particularly in the middle overs, the way we get through there,” he stated.

Australia’s spin department has been depleted with the absence of Matt Short, but Smith pointed to several options at his disposal. “We’ve got Tanveer Sangha in our squad. We’ve got Maxwell, Travis Head can bowl, Marnus can bowl some overs, Cooper Connolly if we go down that path as well,” Smith explained, adding that Glenn Maxwell “is probably better than a part-timer.”

Despite missing several frontline bowlers, Smith has embraced the leadership challenge in this tournament. “It’s been fun captaining these boys the last couple of weeks. Our first objective was to make the semifinals. We’ve done that and now we’re coming up against a good Indian side,” he said.

Smith also highlighted the importance of opener Travis Head, who has been a consistent performer against India. “As we know, Travis has stood up in many big games in the past. He looked in great touch the other night against Afghanistan,” Smith said. “Hopefully he can get away in that power play and get us off to a nice start.”
