Curfew has been imposed and internet connections were withdrawn as massive violence rocked Shillong on Sunday following killing of a fomer HNLC militant leader Cheristerfield Thangkhiew in a reported police encounter on August 13.

The incident triggered violent reactions as many felt it was a cold blooded killing.

The Meghalaya government had already ordered a judicial inquiry into the incident on Monday.

Meghalaya Home Minister Lahkmen Rymbui resigned yesterday stating that the police exceeded the lawful tenets of the law while there were reports of attack on Chief Minister’s residence. Some youths were reported to have thrown petrol bombs at Conrad Sangma’s residence.

Chief Minister Conrad Sangma saidthat five companies of Central Armed Paramilitary Forces of BSF and CRPF are being deployed in the city.

 Besides, there were reports of some miscreants drove around Shillong openly brandishing fire arms and other lethal weapons in a brazen manner on police vehicle that they had snatched before.  The vehicle a black SUV (ML05-F- 3013) belonged to the Mawkynroh Police Outpost. Miscreants snatched it from the policemen after they overpowered the cops in an attack.

Stone pelting on vehicles plying on Assam –Agartala National Highway in Meghalaya was also reported.
