In Tripura, a 51-year-old man, Samarjit Chowdhury, allegedly killed his wife, Tanushree Acherjee, and mother-in-law, Soma Acherjee, following a dispute over social media posts. The incident took place on Sunday at Hapania, on the outskirts of Agartala.

According to police reports, the altercation was sparked by photographs that Tanushree posted on Facebook, which included images with male friends during Durga Puja pandal hopping. Samarjit, who owns a poultry farm, reportedly became enraged upon seeing the posts and decided to confront his wife.

The tragedy unfolded when Tanushree and her mother returned home late on Saturday night after participating in the festivities. Armed with a sharp-edged weapon, Samarjit attacked and killed Tanushree at her father’s home. When Soma attempted to intervene, she was also fatally attacked. Both women died on the spot.

Samarjit and Tanushree had been living separately for over a year after she filed for divorce. The couple’s two sons had been residing with Samarjit in Madhupur, while Tanushree stayed at her parental home in Hapania.

Police arrested Samarjit from Madhupur in the neighboring Sepahijala district shortly after the killings. The bodies of the victims have been sent for autopsy, and authorities are continuing their investigation.

The brutal crime has left the local community in shock, especially during the 5-day-long Durga Puja celebrations. West Tripura District Superintendent of Police, Kiran Kumar K., stated that the accused will be presented in court to seek police custody.
