Ratan Naval Tata, the Chairman Emeritus of Tata Sons and a towering figure in Indian business, passed away today at the age of 86 at Breach Candy Hospital, Mumbai. He had been hospitalized earlier this week due to age-related health issues.
News of Tata’s hospitalization sparked widespread concern, although he had previously assured the public that he was undergoing routine medical tests. Speculation around his condition grew, with reports suggesting he was placed on life support, though these remained unconfirmed by Tata Group officials.
Tata, who served as Chairman of Tata Sons from 1991 to 2012, was instrumental in transforming the group into a global powerhouse with revenues surpassing $100 billion by 2012. He was at the helm during significant acquisitions such as Jaguar Land Rover by Tata Motors and Corus by Tata Steel.
Educated as an architect at Cornell University, Tata began his career with the Tata Group in 1962, working in various capacities before rising to the top. Even after his retirement, he continued to guide the Tata Trusts, focusing on philanthropic efforts in education, healthcare, and social development.
Tata’s influence extended far beyond business. He served on various international boards, including JP Morgan Chase and Mitsubishi Corporation, and was a respected advisor on global platforms.
Ratan Tata’s contributions were recognized with numerous accolades, including the Padma Vibhushan, India’s second-highest civilian honor, in 2008. His work through the Tata Trusts has left a profound and lasting impact on the nation, especially in the areas of education and healthcare.
He is survived by his siblings Simone, Jimmy, Noel, and other family members.

Lok Sabha MP Biplab Kumar Deb in his social media said : Heart is deeply saddened by the sudden demise of Mr. Ratan Tata. He was one of the giants of the Indian industry who will be known for his significant contributions to our economy, business and industry. My deepest condolences to his family, friends and fans.
