Prime Minister Narendra Modi today underlined that climate change and energy transitions are global concerns, and international partnership is critical for promoting the impact of green hydrogen on decarbonisation.

Addressing the International Conference on Green Hydrogen virtually, the Prime Minister highlighted that scaling up production, minimising costs, and building infrastructure can progress faster through cooperation. He also emphasised that there is a growing realisation that climate change is not just a matter of the future, as its impact is being felt here and now.

Mr. Modi said that energy transition and sustainability have become central to global policy discourse. Highlighting that India is committed to creating a cleaner and greener planet, Mr. Modi noted that the country is the first among G20 nations to fulfil its Paris commitments on green energy. He mentioned that these commitments were met nine years ahead of the 2030 target.

Mr. Modi also outlined that India’s non-fossil fuel capacity increased by nearly 300 percent over the last ten years, and the country’s solar energy capacity increased by over 3,000 per cent during the same period. He emphasised that India is not resting on these achievements.

The Prime Minister said that India remained focused on strengthening existing solutions. It is also looking at new and innovative areas. This is where green hydrogen comes into the picture. Green hydrogen is emerging as a promising addition to the world’s energy landscape. He said that Green hydrogen can help in decarbonising industries that are difficult to electrify.  India has already launched the National Green Hydrogen Mission in 2023.

Underscoring that the Government wants to make India a global hub for the production, utilisation, and export of green hydrogen, the Prime Minister said that the national Green Hydrogen Mission is giving an impetus to innovation, infrastructure, industry, and investment. He noted that the country is investing in cutting-edge research and development. Partnerships between industry and academia are being formed. Startups and entrepreneurs who are working in this domain are being encouraged.
