Kartik Das of Rajnagar had almost a Subroto Mukerjee moment –the Air Chief Marshal who had died in Japan on November 8, 1960 when a bone got stuck in his throat.  But Kartik was lucky as the doctors at Gomati District Hospital took immediate the right decision and conducted a complicated surgery to bring out the bone from the windpipe.

Rwenti one year old Kartik Das of Rajnagar of South Tripura a got a chicken bone-about four inches long stuck in the throat –the place which medical term pin points as right pyriform sinus. The result was Kartik was choking severely and in trauma.

He was rushed to the in Gomati District Hospital and immediately admitted. Dr. Pradip Mallik, ENT Surgeon of the hospital said the four-inch long chicken bone was in a very bad shape. As patient was choking, the doctors were left with only two options –one is to refer him to AGMC or perform the surgery in the hospital. Considering the condition of the patient they went for the second option.

“We have been able to remove the bone with video laryngoscopy. The patient is now stable and doing well”, said Dr. Mallick.

Medical Superintendent Dr Kajal Kumar Das said, “we are happy that his life is saved now. But in such type of incident, the patient should be brought to the hospital directly”. He appreciated the role of Kartik’s family for taking the right decision in right time and bringing him to the hospital.

The surgery ward of Gomati District hospital in recent years proved its potential with some successful critical operations. Dr. Biswajit Paul, surgeon was also awarded the best surgeon in this year during State Level function of Doctor’s Day.
